Hi All
Just a short one on a problem I had with my 87 Turbo
After her winter layoff she started without an issue and ran no problem
After 15 mins of idle she cut out
Restart attempted and no start after approx 5 seconds of cranking
I switched the key off and went to get out and she backfired
She was sitting for 5-10 mins while I done a quick check around
Restarted again and I drove home - Car was a bit off but I put the whole issue down to bad fuel
Went to Mondello park and no issues - Next run out was a week later to Westport - Car ran fine for a good 30 miles then missed and started to backfire once again
The coil had an old Cobra alarm spliced into the + wire side of the coil with straight through crimps
Wiggled crimps and restarted
Car ran not too bad and got me home
Went to switch off at the house and the ignition key was warm !
Car had no start the next morning - I suspected the front TDC reference sensor was duff so lifted both sensors and noticed a bit of damage to both - Then discovered that there was no shim on the RPM sensor and the bracket itself was at full up position.
Got the shim for the back sensor refitted and set up the sensors again - Bracket now set midway
Car started no issue and I put the whole issue down to misaligned sensors or so I thought ...!!
Car ran happy out and I went out a spin only for her to cut out again 1.5miles from the house
Got a tow home
Car again started on the driveway
Cut out the connectors and done a stress test with a H7 bulb to check the current delivery to the coil
Redid the + wire to the coil
Car started no issue - Left to run but cut out again after 10 mins !!
So there is a lad close to me in Claremorris who had a spare coil - Fitted said coil and car idling perfect, key is cold and she ran for 45 mins with no problem
If this is the root cause its a lesson to us all - Dont ignore the basics - I chased shadows and this led me to sensors and alarms
Keep your fingers crossed
