Porsche 944 Plate Values

I'm looking for a plate that appears to have been registered in Birmingham but doesn't appear to exist anymore. How is that possible? How do I get it?

If the plate has been issued previously and then the vehicle was scrapped without the plate being removed the DVLA will never re-issue it.

The only way to find out will be to ring the DVLA and ask them if it is available to be put into a future auction on Tel. 0300 123 0883. They will tell you if this is possible.

I agree that a good number of contrived plates do little more than make the owner look like a knob. They are quite prevelent in Essex, as you would expect, and frequently convey orange people around the place. On the other hand, noting that you have to have a plate anyway, something which relates to the car is quite nice and less anonymous as a result. Whether that is a good thing is of course debatable.

Thanks to your very helpful post I have contacted the DVLA and been informed that the plate I want has never been issued, it seems that the site I checked was incorrect. I have placed my interest in the plate in question with the DVLA but it appears that they won't allow me to buy it and will only auction it once there is enough interest from several people. This is very frustrating as I can barely afford to buy a plate at £250 so 1 bid from someone else and it'll take it out of my budget. This is if it ever gets released as if nobody else shows an interest it appears that they'll not bother putting it up for sale. Anything i'm getting wrong? Any suggestions are gratefully received.

Just get a few of your mates to register interest. Eventually they'll put it up for sale.

I thought about this but had wondered if the DVLA have an algorithm that detects a lot of people registering for the same plate in a short time or within a small area.

When I bought my 944 back in 1999 ish I asked about A94FOR thinking as fun plate may go relatively cheaply

went for about £1500 IIRC
