Porsche 356b resto project values

Hi all, I've got a bit of a treat (or maybe an eyesore) for you.

I have the opportunity to acquire a 356b that needs a lot of work but it comes with a lot of spare parts (including 5 part engines and 3 gearboxes) which is great. The challenge is what is the car worth? I know the answer is 'what someone will pay for it' really in this condition but I am interested to know what other people might pay for this. Let me know your thoughts.

When you post let me know if you would be doing it yourself or paying a company to do the resto as obviously that makes a difference in costs. I'm in the UK, but I think with something like this, it has an international market so I don't mind what you post in currency wise.

If I were buying it I would not pay more than £30 - £35K, there is a lot to do to restore a car like that and professional restoration costs are high. However the car looks fairly complete and is LHD which makes spare parts more available. Good Luck if you buy it. there is always someone out there who is looking for such a project.

Take a look at the Car SOS episode with the 356, that was about £200K of work!

Yours may not be quite as bad but it does look a bit sorry fo itself, I would think it needs to be well under £30K as you will be looking at £70K+ for a proper restoration minimum.

Yes we have an agreement. I’m now trying to work out shipping back to the UK from South Africa!


I have no idea how I’m going to restore it just yet as I have no inside space other than to store it.

Anyone have any suggestions? I’m in Poole.

Thanks for the tip. When I've got a solid date on shipping and things like that I'll move on to where I'm going to store it and how I'm going to restore it and all that. It comes with a load of parts so will also need to sift through those to see exactly whats there and whats missing.

I'll pop back and put some updates here as it happens if anyones interested. ... might also film it for a YouTube channel that I'm thinking of actually getting started.

Hi Rad, I know when I exported my 356 out of the UK any paperwork was invaluable! Hench . a V5 was a must to show current details. So I'm saying whatever the UK import rules are, get as much paperwork as possible to show ownership, servicing etc.
There are a dozen or so suppliers around the world for 356 parts but I don't think you should discount any secondhand items that might just get you going a little bit quicker ie. Interior coverings (door panels, carpets, rear seats )- fittings that need re-chroming - bumpers - indicators etc because all these parts really add up when buying new. Some stuff isn't that bad . it's just some guys like to keep upgrading to a possibly higher standard of coveting . You can always swap them for new stuff later on.
