Hi,

I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction with a few things. I not long ago purchased a 944 S2 (1989) and at the moment it needs a few things done to it...

do you know where i can get a new 'number 9' from? , the one at the back is partially snapped off, not sure if it was like that when purchased or its happened since...

also the car seems to make a 'burning' smell, i only notice it when I get out of the car, coming from the engine area or tyres... any thoughts? nothing seems to be wrong though?!

thanks

Hi Natalie and welcome. There are lots of breakers who will have a "9" or I would have thought the complete 944, to keep it all in line. Sulzeruk and Elliott on here are both good knowledgeable and reliable, there are several others, maybe more local.

The burning smell could be various things, one I get is a very small leak from the cam box which eventually ends up on the exhaust manifold!

Whereabouts are you as its very difficult to take pictures of a smell!

It is also normal for us to demand photos of any new acquisition[:)]

Hi Natalie, and welcome. [:)]

Have you called a Porsche centre for a price on a new rear badge? They are often surprisingly cheap. Also, Rick Cannell does loads of vinyl options here (a long way down the page!) 944 decals

The 9 will be available from you local Porsche centre or Porsche Shop (the whole 944 S2 needs to be ordered I think), if you get from breaker it will have lost its sticky foam back.

Smell could be many things, poss oil leak but could also be power steering fluid (ask me how I know) or something else, prob best to have someone look at it.

As Mike said we also require pictures...[;)]

Looking at the Porscheshop listings, you could perhaps buy the cheaper "944" version and just use the "9"? Whether it's worth it, as the plastic might well be a different shade of black or silver, I don't know. Seeing as the "s" and "2" more than double the cost!

I like Rick's vinyl option as they are flat, so don't trap dirt the same way.

Most likley smell will be sticky calipers.and brakes burning. What does it smell like? Try putting you hand on the wheel and feel if it is hot.Dont just put your hand straight on as you might burn it if it is the brake calipers sticking.

The earlier 9 is a different font completely and wouldn't match the rest on the car, vinyl is ok if you dint mind the look.

To restore your badge to its former glory if I were you Natalie I would order the set from OPC/Porsheshop, remove the 944 S2 badges from the rear of car with dental floss, you cut through the sticky foam back like cheese cutter, (do not try and lever it off as you can damage the paint), carefully remove all sticky residue, polish area with good paint restorer to remove all marks that always get in between the numbers and letters (and are a pig to remove when they are in place). Fit badge and make sure you place new numbers/letters in correct placing/spacing as per image.

A small but faithful restoration to your S2 that wont cost the earth and will likely last another 20+ years...

Or you could try a cheap upgrade. Take off the 944S2 badge, a replace it with the word Turbo[:D]

Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback. Ill take a pic of the car and post soon.

I'm near to staines. Guess I should take it to the gaurage to get it checked out.

It's very friendly forum. [:D][:D] I m sure theres someone down your way who could and wouldgive the car car a sniff for free, some garages may see more than necessary, if you know what I mean.

Hi Natalie,

The Porsche evening at the Ace Cafe would be a good opportunity to let someone have a look, there are usually a few 944 owners there, and plenty of experienced Porsche addicts.

It's the first Monday of every month, but the ideal one would be the April date when there's a 944 gathering there.

944's do tend to make smells, like a whiffy old Border Collie, I was a bit brtual with the clutch on mine on a dry road and it rewarded me with a disgusting smell of burning clutch for my troubles.
