I can understand the near side of cars getting rustier than the off side, as the gutter side will get more stonechips and probably more salt washed over it as well. One new rear caliper is an interesting explanation. I wonder if front calipers suffer less plate lift as they get hotter (they work harder) and hence stay drier? Oli.

Plate Lift

Interesting as my two fronts and NS rear were really bad but the offside rear was pretty minimal! Even the plate screws cam out comparatively easily!!
ORIGINAL: 944 man This is a spare set and Im not sure whether to leave them as-is and store them as spares or whether to advertise them for sale. The PL is minimal on three of the calipers but severe on the remaining rear. Im now split between refurbing all four (unlikely) or keeping hold of them knowing that the fronts can be used as spares if the need arises.

Indeed. The NS sill gets all the crud from the gutter, the OS gets all the clean water from the crown of the road. Hence my NS wing needing two repairs when the OS was fine. Back on subject, I learnt to my cost that leaving the calipers to get worse increases the costs exponentionally. If they need fixing, then fix them; bodging it only postpones the inevitable and runs the risk of greater cost. Just the cost of the welding to get my stuck bolts out was more than Oli's estimate of a complete DIY refurb if you catch it early.....I can understand the near side of cars getting rustier than the off side, as the gutter side will get more stonechips and probably more salt washed over it as well.

Explanation: new style caliper fitted to my car and the three remaining have minor plate lift. The caliper removed from my car was on its arse!ORIGINAL: zcacogpThis sounds like an odd situation - are they all from the same car? Any idea how this arose? You'd expect plate lift to be similar on all the calipers on one car, or at least similar on an axle (or on a side, perhaps). To have one grossly different from the other three sounds odd. Helpful - thanks! Oli.ORIGINAL: 944 man Explanation: new style caliper fitted to my car and the three remaining have minor plate lift. The caliper removed from my car was on its arse!
from pictures i posted here, Your calipers are the black ones [ORIGINAL: edh Are these the ones you got from me? I can vouch for Olli's work - a set of his refurbed calipers were stopping me very well at Cadwell today
