Places for the Register to go next year

bones

Next year when sunny days arrive again we need some places for us SCers to go. I'm thinking for those who live within shooting disatnce of the M25 there is the 'Mosquito Museum' , I've been and it's a small disused airfield with a few hangers where Mosquito aircraft are in various states of restoration, plus the De-Havilland Museum is there too.
For other SCers around the country you could organise your own events wherever you live. I'm thinking of appointing Regional SC reps ie Scotland, Wales and Ireland - subject to approval. Do you peeps think this is a smart move as one person can't be everywhere and this means the SC is represented at events throughout the country .

Hi Bones,
The Mosquito museum sounds great to me, for clarification where is it?.
Seeing these airscaft is various stages of reconstruction would be very interesting.
Living in Southampton we have the RJ Mitchel museum which has been a great favourite of mine. The Spitfire is without doubt a beautiful design just like out SC's
The Southcoast is probably too far for most but I have an idea.
How about a group of SCers turning up at Goodwood and watch some cars girate the track. The Porsche track days are midweek so this might be a problem but the Goodwood track days are at the weekend and there are plenty of Porsches to see on the track as well as other classics. I went to the last Goodwood trackday and it was great, no entry fee, park no the circuit and have a picknick if you want. There is also plenty of space for kids to run about while the dads enjoy the cars.

The idea of reginal reps is a good one. you can't beat local knowledge.

Cheers
John

Hi John the Mosquito 'Museum' is near J25 on the M25, that's near Potter's Bar. It is only a tiny place but is still worth seeing, there is a big pub nearby, half the fun of these things is the drive and the social get to together anyway. I'm wondering if Register Sec's should just invite every one to 'Register' events. I know that everybody is welcome at club events automatically what ever model one owns so therefore why don't we just say such and such an event is planned by the SC register everyone welcome or am I missing something?
A day at Goodwood or any race track would be cool, I thought a trip to Beauleigh would be of interest too or the Naval dockyards at Portsmouth. There are lods of places , more ideas please folks.

Guys,
just in passing, another suggestion: the Porsche shop (birmingham) is planning (not yet official) a trip over to the Isle of Man in May of next year. This could be some event?
Just a thought? ..not official...ok?

I'd love to get over there at some point and pay you a visit Peter , the club of course run a trip over too.

Bones,
This planned venture to the IoM next year could be a pretty big thing, with a possible 100+ people interested.
It could be quite something - especially if "others" have some input, (other than the PCGB usual crowd)!!?
Keep it in mind.

Hi Peter I've made a note of this, there is a meeting of RSs and ROs in Novemeber so I will mention this and see how the land lies, it's personally something I want to do anyway.

Pete -checked out the Mossie museum for you!! Well worth a visit. It's near London Colney, signposted from J23/M25 by the big Sainsbury's, about 2 mins drive. Limited opening -check their website.

Also, in an aviation nature :

Hendon RAF museum (entry free!!); Mitchell museum at S'ton worth a visit; Duxford; Shuttleworth Collection; RAF Cosford; Science Museum collection at Wroughton, nr. Swindon (limited opening though); Brooklands -the home of british aviation and motor racing.....

I've heard that Coventry's refurbished museum of transport is well worth a visit. Heritage Museum at Gaydon -good day out and excellent restaurant; car museum at Bourton-on-the-Water -cld combine with visit to Club HQ at Moreton? how about a register trip to Goodwood on a PCGB trackday?

Rgds

Glad you enjoyed that Mel, there's a lot there for such a tiny place. For anyone who is interested you can join the 'Mosquito Museum' folks and help keep some of these old aircraft in the air. Coincidentally enough a number of SC owners have suggested Goodwood as a day out for the SCs so hopefully by the time the November seminar comes along I'll have a list of things to do and places to go for next year.

Goodwood, Mossie Museum, Duxford all get my vote. Beaulieu and Portsmouth Naval Dockyard and the others sound good.

Offering the events more widely sounds a good idea.

Brands could be a good venue. This link is for a good unofficial site for events etc http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/brands-hatch/.

I have a couple of little kids so generally won't be able to go as far afield as I would otherwise, but for them, the SC is a "family car" (well it has four seats doesn't it!).

This is good more suggestions please. I would like somemembers to step forward as assistants for Wales, Scotland and Ireland and also I think the North of Engalnd , then the SC is covered for arranging events more easily throughout the country.

Places to go next year will be discussed at the RO and RS meeting on Sunday. The list so far includes -

Santapod
Duxford
Goodwood on a PCGB trackday
Mosquito Museum
Beaulieu
Portsmouth Naval Dockyard
Technical Days - JZ - Autofarm - Tuthill -
http://www.export56.com/woadcorner.jsp

but it would be nice if a few more Northerly members could chip in and make some suggestions for the North of England and Scotland and possibly become a Register Secretrary Assistant (expenses paid) to help run these events.

The Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford near Yeovil in Somerset is well worth a visit.

http://www.haynesmotormuseum.com/index.php - don't be put off by the dodgy website

Obviously owned by the car manual publishers it has a huge collection of really rare and quite common cars, all displayed as groups but not as other motor museums would do (i.e. not chronologically). I vaguely remember the Red Collection - all bright red sportscars from the sixties, Supercar Collection, Sportscars and loads of the types of cars our dads and grandads would have driven.

And here's the best bit - the museum is also surrounded by a track which can be hired by clubs and groups for trackdays, and it's just a quick blast down the M3/A303 for you M25 types.

Santa Pod is worth a visit especially if they have a Top Fuel weekend. The sound, sight, heat and resonating internal organs are something you must experience first hand to appreciate fully.

That's a great suggestion Richard , I've been on the phone a lot today trying to finalise some dates with no success but come Monday I'll give them a call I know Mark Haynes a little, he used to compete in Porsche race events a few years back.
