Picking up the 66 from Shipping company (Advise)

Hi

I am picking the car up from the warehouse first thing Thursday, apparantly it has a charge in the battery and petrol so it runs. It has been in shipping for 7 weeks.

Any tips as I am planning on driving down to Dover and getting the ferry over to Calais and driving to St Malo to get the ferry home to Jersey. Should I add some of that techron carb cleaner to a new tank of fuel. It is a pretty long drive anthing I should be aware of or precaution i can take?

You are a braver man than me. Did you drive the car before it was shipped, presumably fron the USA?

First thing you need to know is that it illegal to drive an unregistered car on UK roads. Do you have trade plates?

Make sure that the car still runs, as shipping companies have a strange habit of leaving the lights on..... Take a full tool kit just in case.

Had a PPI done in USA from an independent source, he then did some work on it before shipping.
It was shipped in a container from the west coast so it was driven from the container when unpacked.

Dont have the luxury of a taking a full toolkit on the plane, I have spoken to the warehouse who do a condition report on the car for insurance purposes on arrival and they have conformed it runs fine.

As for the unregistered part, it is legal as I have it on a temporary import license before taking it back to Jersey, this has been cleared with UK customs otherwise I would have to pay VAT.

If you can't take a full tool kit make a tool role from a picee of old clothes, take spare bulbs and fuses, a fan belt and the tools necessary to fit it (if the plane co allow that) , a litre of oil, a can of get you home tyre puncture repair goo (that may be a problem on the plane too) and maybe a litre bottle of water with screen wash in (you can always chuck it if it's not required). There aren't many mechanical emergencies beyond minor ones you can fix at the road side anyway.
 
One thing I would do is take the main HT lead off and give it a quick spin to get the oil pressure up before you go for a full start up with it back on.. I always do this first.

Still a brave man. I have seen ok to drive cars from the US... hmmm. Good luck. oil and bulbs and an RAC card if they will pick you up..

Hate to rain on the parade but you are planning to drive out of the UK on US plates into France then out of France back into the UK? You better make sure you have all the necessary paper work, like insurance for one. I think the toolkit is the least of your worries. I think you are going to be in the lap of the Gods at all frontiers... :( Either Customs will wave you through with a smile or jump on you like a lead rhino... good luck.

A temporary import license allows you to bring a vehicle in for touring purposes, although you have to provide proof of exit to customs.

Well made it back to Jersey, 1 hour drive to Dover, biggest problem was following the roadsigns from Chatham.

Calais to St Malo, 6 hour drive, no road sign problems, was stopped by the Gendarme but that was because I was trying to read a map while driving. He pointed me in the right direction and remarked on how he liked the car.

Picked up the wife and went to Rennes for the weekend and back (1 hour each way)

Took a bit of getting used to, not like the 964, but more relaxing to drive.

I guess we er on the side of caution, which is always best imho.
Glad you got home ok, sounds like the bug has bitten.
Would be great to have some pics or even an article for the register website about your adventures?
