Hi guys

I picked up my 944 today, I shall say pictures will follow tomorrow (when it stops raining) as got home while it was dark so not managed to get any yet, sorry! Car drove amazingly the whole way home from harlow to west cornwall :)
I would like to say thank-you Terry (if you read this) for the car as already fallen in love with her and received some compliments about her from a specialist dealer in Devon and turned a few heads already, she shall be taken good care off.
Still cant drive her myself till 13th feburary but gives me some time to sort a few bits and pieces that I want to sort out and ask a few questions.

The water temp gauge pretty much stays to the top and occasionally drops down seems temperamental, been told it has been like this the whole time it was owned by terry and hes tried changing the coolent sensor and done nothing. Though I would like to change it myself just for my peace of mind, though seen loads of different sensors some saying for 2.5's or 2.7s or 3l's ect and some saying theyl fit them all, is there any difference in them? Before I buy the wrong one.

The oil pressure gauge also remains high as well is this normal for 944's? As not seen anything mentioned on them.

The dash lights are also very dim when on full could this be the switch and not the bulbs?

and finally does anyone know anywhere that still sells roof bars for 944's? As shall really need a set quite quickly once I'm on the road.

sorry for the instant questions just some things I want to sort asap and want to double check before I buy anything, and have her sorted for when I can drive :)
Pics shall follow soon.

thanks

Will

Glad you got it home trouble free Will!! :) Pics are a must! I wish I could help you but I'm as new to you at this!

Which one did you go for? 2.5 8v?

was good man spent the whole journy with a grin ear to ear and I wasnt even driving.
No worries man, I'm always nervour as buying stuff for the car when new to them and my dad isnt 100% confident either with whether theirs any differences in parts. Once have them I'm generally happy to attempt to fit stuff as long as I know if I mess up it wont be a catastrophe lol. Hows yours coming along?
Went for a 2.7 8v in the end :)

Mostly simple questions there.

Oil gauge fails to reading 5 all the time, so that's probably just the sender.

Dash lights are reflected off silvered reflectors that corrode, so it goes dim. Either get a proper kit to replace, get the prisms re-silvered, or get over-powered bulbs that melt things.

Roof bars are, as you say, hard to find. The last set on ebay made £250, and I'd have bought them for that if I'd seen the auction! I guess you could look at worldwide auctions, as they obviously aren't RHD-specific.

Just done the dash prisms myself following clarks garage guide.

Removed the silvering with nail varnish remover and taped tin foil over the clear prisms. Added some weird looking LED bulbs and tons better!

brilliant thanks paul just got some follow up questions though if thats ok?

is there any specific switches for the water temp and oil pressures for the 2.7 or will it be the same as the 2.5 as so far think they seem to be the same and just the s2 and turbo are differnt?

remember reading about the reflectors fading and had forgoten about that, will bright led's do anything do you know as they remain cool in temp?

Shall need to keep my eyes peeled then as need them for my kayaks so i can get to the beach or find a river with a bit of white water.

cheers
Will

When the engine is hot the oil pressure should be around 5 bar when you are driving and around 3 bar when idling

No one makes roof bars anymore and you will be lucky if you see more than a couple of sets for sale every year [:(]

sweet sounds good shall look at that!
Thanks!

Well done on getting the 2.7. Love mine.

Does the oil p go straight to 5, but doesn't drop at tickover?. If so sender is wired wrongly, if it varies thats ok, they often have good pressure.

Only ever seen 1 set of bars on a car.

Thanks man, Terry the guy who I bought it off has cared for it really well and compiled an amazing list of history for it and its a credit to him.
Just these one or two issues which he mentioned to me on buying.
Without double checking I think it goes straight to 5, know it didnt drop on the whole journey home and stayed on 5. Do you know the difference between the pressure sender and the pressure switch?
I've seen two on ebay one ended early and the other I was highest bidder but it didnt meet the reserve :/

Will

If swapping the terminals on the pressure sender doesn't work, I'd get a new oil pressure sender if I were you...can't be that expensive and you know it's going to work.
testing tips here..http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-19.htm Clarks garage is great

Try Bert @ partsforporsche. He will know exactly what parts you need. or maybe GSF. There are 2 coolant temp senders, one is for the ECU, one for the gauge.

Download PET - the Porsche parts catalogue. It will confirm all the part numbers you need for your car, and has great exploded parts diagrams to help work out how things go together.

The workshop manuals are kicking about somewhere as well

Before you buy the roof bars - you might be surprised how much fits in a 944 with the rear seats down [:D]

If you replace the mirror finish on the dash prisms be careful when removing the old reflector material odn't use normal nail varnish remover as the acetone will melt or mark the plasitic use acetone free nail varnish remover (sort for false nails I think) you can use spray adhesive to fix the new material to the prisms and then tape over to protect it, I used black tank tape as masking tape comes off when it gets hot, best replacement lights I have used were LED with multiple little LEDs on the top and all sides T10 501 194 W5W 10 LED SMD Car Side Wedge Light Lamp Bulb got mine from eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120880731838?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 you will need 3 for the main instruments plus any other that may be out but those for the warning lights etc are different. I used mirror foil from my local hobby craft shop. While you have the cluster out to do this you could check the connections for the oil pressure and temperature.

The water temp sensor feeding the dash gauge is the same for all oval dash cars : 928 606 201 01
The intake manifold might need to be removed to replace it.

Does the triggering pattern of the fans correspond to the movement of the dash gauge?

Cheers guys that is all a big help gonna look at ordering the parts now then to get it all sorted :)

edh lots may fit with the back seats down but I think my 8ft white water kayak and my 5/6ft freestyle kayak might be pushing it a bit ;) lol.

TTM what do you mean by the triggering pattern of the fans?

Cheers
Will

When the fans begin to run, does it make sense with what the gauge shows and/or the movements of the gauge?

Does the shown temperature goes down after the fans have been running for a while?

There are a set of Porsche 944 roof bars on eBay at the minute. Price is £225 but open to offers [:)]

On my iPad so can't post the link but type in Porsche 944 roof bars

Bought the temp and oil sensors yesterday evening so they will apparently be here tuesday :)
Cheers guys I did spot them last night and have put them on my watch list for a minute, not really wanting to spend £200 on a set atm and am chasing down another possible set though think im grasping at short straws with them.
Also got a few pictures as well :) took the car up to Tesco this mourning (well dad did) so got some on the way back, please excuse how filthy it is but the roads are minging and we live in the countryside.
She is also very red as she had a mop up a few years ago just unfortunately my camera has done the usual thing of making it look faded and different shades.
May also be 996 shopping soon with my dad (already viewed a couple, one at a specilist who complimented and showed real interest in my 944 as well:) ) as now he's driven the 944 (had a cayman from porsche exeter for a courtesy car) he's hankering after another sports car, while he's not seeing the need for a cayenne when my mum's just got a l200 all hes got to do is finish twisting her arm I think lol.
