Hi I have a 2016 991.2 C4S with 48k miles and excellent service history. There is an audible 'chatter' coming from the PDK which can only be heard from inside the car and only when idling. It is not really loud but i can hear it. I took the car to a specialist Porsche garage and they carried out a re-set with the plug in computer and this has made a slight improvement but i can still hear a faint mechanical noise (sounds like a exhaust heat shield but it is not). Does anyone have any ideas and is this normal? Thanks in advance for the advice!

When was the box last serviced?
Hi Neil,
The 991 PDK transmission has a dual mass flywheel and if it fails or is failing it’s possible that this could lead to the issue you describe. Unfortunately it would need the transmission to be removed to check, and of course the cause could be elsewhere which would mean a complete - and very expensive - replacement transmission because Porsche don’t regard it as a serviceable item.
Probably best just to learn to live with it unless it becomes a lot worse or affects the functioning of the transmission.

Hi, the box has never had a service but this was my intended next step. Thanks. When was the box last serviced?
Hi Jeff thanks for your response. That's a concern obviously. The car changes gear well and is functioning perfectly so i was hoping that this maybe down to requiring a re-set and a through oil and filter service. I have wondered if this is just a characteristic of the PDK box. Thanks Neil.Hi Neil,

Neil I think the official PDK service period for your car is 12-years/120,000 miles, so I’d agree that it’ll be worth having an oil and filter service carried out if it’s never been done, especially since the reset by your Porsche Independent has given only a marginal improvement, so your options are very limited.
Good luck!
Jeff
Good luck!

Are there any Porsche Technicians on this group who could shed any light on what can be considered 'normal' operating sounds with the PDK box?
Thanks for your response, yes the specialist garage is telling me the same. It is just worrying especially if you plan to do any long road trips, which i do have planned in the near futrure (Germany/Swiss Alps etc).My two 981s with PDK both chattered at idle in N or P. Had the 2013 one 8 years, nearly new when I bought it (sold at 37k miles) and the 2016 one more than 3 years (sold at 38k miles). Just normal I think.
Neil, even if you’re not a Club member I think your best bet would be to get along to one of the Club’s regional monthly meetings in your area. The PDK transmission is a very common option with the modern water-cooled cars and I’m sure that there will be at least a couple of owners who would let you see if those cars display the same issue as yours.
