PCM 3.1 CarPlay Upgrade

Looking into options to upgrade my PCM (3.1 with software version 4.76) in order to get CarPlay.

I have made a couple of enquiries with ICE specialists and OPC still awaiting responses but wonder if anyone has any experience or advice to share around options, approaches, costs etc.

I have been asking for this for my 2015 Cayman which also has PCM 3.1 V4.76.

I read in a Porsche magazine some time ago that providing you have 'online services' you can update the PCM to have 'live traffic updates'. I asked my local PC about this but they were unaware and had not done it for anyone.
Reading PC who supplied the car admitted it was possible but were vague and had no price.

An external company is offering to modify the PCM to give full CarPlay facilities but it does involve installing a board within the PCM which would invalidate the Porsche warranty sadly. This company admit that the 'live traffic' option from Porsche was available but there is doubt if it will work with iOS12

The Porsche Tequipment Accessories Finder gives enables you to find what upgrades are officially available by model. Some OPCs seem to make finding the info more difficult than the Porsche web site. Note that under Model Selection there are separate categories for generations (eg Macan I and Macan II). http://content2.eu.porsch...%20und%20Kommunikation

Yes as Clive says a company in Guernsey sell this, it sounds good but does involve modifying your PCM. I've messaged Nick Marquis and he's very knowledgeable and helpful.

Keith - interesting on Reading PC - they are my local dealer and I am talking to them about this to see what they say.

Nothing yet from them as yet but intrigued that they said it was possible on PCM3.1. I would rather they do this than a third party...

Looking at the Techquipment site it looks like it is only 2016 onwards models that Porsche can do this on - if this is the case I feel Porsche are missing a sales opportunity!!!

I may have mis-led you, Reading PC were admitting that 'Live traffic updates' for sat nav were available rather than installing CarPlay. There weren't however able to give me a price, details of how it would work etc. The Techquipment site does of course give the price and an explanation regarding using the 'Aha' app.

What Nick Marquis offers is the full CarPlay facility but I'm nervous about installing a pcb in my PCM as it will invalidate the Porsche warranty. It would be interesting to hear what Reading make of this given how sensitive they are towards modifying anything on the car.

I have PCM 3.1 with V4.76 in my 981, it has "online services" activated which is pretty poor tbh you just use an app called AHA to stream music/DAB to the headunit.

RTTI doesn't seem to work though, I think you have to enable RTTI separately.

personally Id say don't waste your cash
My 2018 has it and Im not impressed
for example in CarPlay album covers don't show in stand connection they do also the way it Handels phone calls is clumsy
Over all it oddly sits like a layer above the normal PCM and you lose some of the PCM functionality when in CarPlay mode.
As a result I never use it
If it was a £50 upgrade Id say dive in.

IMHO ask for a new Macan for test drive and try it out 1st and see if you agree

Hi, update on this.... realising I did not give you an update. Nick at NM Automotive was amazing. I put him in touch with Connor at John Kleis ICE in Reading. The two of them had a number of discussions and Connor’s team installed it for me.

Nick was on call with John Kleis during the install - which was useful as they had one or two challenges as it was the first time they had done it... however all great in the end. The John Kleis team were really impressed with the detail of the instructions.

The final result - I am really pleased with - for me it has eliminated any reason to change the car, and is an enormous improvement on the standard PCM navigation. (I recently took out a Gen2 Macan and the wide screen and Google Earth style navigation is nice but not enough to make we want to swap - if there was a Diesel option it might be a different story - but there is a whole new conversation....)

NM Automotive have the kit here https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/carplay-androidauto. You could fit it yourself.... but for me it needed a professional - I sent the details to a couple of local ICE suppliers and asked for quotes. I did not pick the cheapest as I wanted it right and it became about who I trusted.

I've a May 2018 RS gen 2, how do I make / add Waze to the menu, in fact how do I add any App ? I'm not well up on how to do this stuff !

You need to go into Settings, CarPlay on your phone.
If you select the name of the CarPlay kit you then get a screen that looks like the one in your car. You can move icons around.

In terms of getting Waze on there - it should be there automatically if you have the app on your phone... it could be on a screen further to the right.

I am guessing installing could be a murky area when it comes to potentially invalitating warranty, depending on the dealer. theorerically its not physically visible as a modification unless you play around withe the nav.

If you have CarPlay on the PCM already but cannot link iPhone to it unless you use a usb cable plugged into car and phone there are a couple of usb dongles that may well work -Carlinkit @.0 or Joye Auto. Plugs into car usb and then after following instructions will link iPhone wireless to PCM. Check which version you need for your car, I think you have to have PCM 3.1. Worth a look as do not have to take out the PCM, fit another motherboard etc. Cost around the £145 mark.
