PCGB at Knockhill - featured in Daily Record on-line

Great to see the Knockhill event featured on national media. An excellent gallery of photos and good exposure for the club.

It was an uphill struggle to get Knockhill included in the PCGB track day calendar. Previous attempts had failed due to lack of support. It was largely due to Scott Laurie R1 and myself for persistently campaigning for Knockhill to be included as the only Scotland event. This persuaded Steve Kevlin to give Knockhill another try.

My track day and motorsport talk to R2 in 2015 did no harm either.

Thanks to everyone for their support in making this event such a success.

It looks like a firm diary fixture now, Steve Kevlin reckons each year it gets more popular with this years sold out and I understand we took some spaces back from OPC Glasgow. (They really should include OPC Edinburgh on the guest list)

regards
Scott.

I couldn't agree more Scott.

I have been a customer of OPC Edinburgh for 9 years, and have unsuccessfully tried to enlist their interest in supporting the PCGB track day at Knockhill. The marketing and sales staff just don't seem interested in motorsport. I'm with Aberdeen OPC now and unfortunately the same response there.

A great day thanks to the efforts of quite a number of people both before and on the day. The only shortcomings for me were that howling wind (never been so cold at KH!) and not getting on track till 1000. The registration process needs looking at to ensure drivers and passengers get maximum track time. I suspect part of the problem was people getting to the registration desk with forms not completed; I think we were encouraged to do so beforehand somewhere in all that verbiage we were sent, but if not, we should be. It might get people to do so if they were sent off to complete them and rejoin at the back of the queue! Perhaps also more people are needed on registration. I certainly don't recall the commercial trackday operators I have (limited) experience of needing so much time to get the show on the road. Perhaps someone needs to talk to them and discover their secrets.... If nothing else perhaps the briefing should start on time, regardless of whether registration is complete, and registration continues afterwards. At least then the people who arrive in good time with all the correct documentation could get the most out of the day.

Rant over and I'm now donning the steel helmet (composite these days of course!) and waiting for the return fire. I should emphasise that I thoroughly enjoyed the day, both on track and the display organised by Brian Wood - I just think we can do better.

Richard, sounds like ALL PCGB trackdays in my experience. They're always slow to get going owing to too much messing around. Never book just a morning because you will get hardly any track time!

Hi Richard,
no need to don the steel (kevlar) hat, what you say is spot on and the observations from quite a few on the day. I'm collating all feedback from the event, track day and PATH and will certainly pass this on to the team at PCGB and Knockhill as its recognised a few 'tweaks' are required for next years event. Having said that, for the first joint event of this kind it was a great day with some lovely cars there. I thoroughly enjoyed the track action.
Hopefully things will be a lot slicker next year but sorry, cant promise a wind free day.
See you Monday for our Oulton Park, Anglesey adventure.
Regards,
Donald.

Having only been involved in the PATH side of the event ...it went very well for a first time event with some 140 cars on display .A few extra bodies would not have gone amiss to help with the parking up and getting cars out for the parade laps...I did not hear one negative remark about the PATH side of the event and had the weather which we all have no control over the display would have been even greater .
Combining it with the track day is essential to draw in owners and spectator's . and maybe other attractions to entertain all who attend.
Looking forward to round 2 in 2018

Well, I'm not going to win a popularity vote here, but I thought the PATH event was to the detriment of the track day.
The day started with the gate trying to charge my boys an entry fee because it was only free entry for Porsches. We told them we were not there for the PATH event but for the track day. Even when I showed them paperwork that the boys had paid to drive the track they were not happy and the four people at the gate started arguing amongst themselves.
My wife had the same problem when she arrived. She is a member and showed her card. Still wouldn't let her in. I had to go to gate and explain that club members get free entry to spectate at PCGB track days.. it's clearly written on the club website.
Before the event we were told that there would be 2 separate areas, track and PATH, and only track people would get into the track paddock by showing their driver band... that was not the case.
When trying to drive into the paddock after leaving the track, there were people wandering all over the place, stopping us from driving straight to our parking spots.
I even saw someone sitting on a members car getting a photo taken.
When leaving the paddock to go to the track it was just as bad with people wandering about. The Knockhill marshalls at the entrance and exit of the paddock were completely useless at stopping people walking in front of the cars.
I feel that PATH participants should have had to use the main canteen and not the "drivers" canteen.
Its not fair that when we paid over £200 for the day that we could not get a cuppa straight away because of all the people that got in for free taking up the majority of the seats.
There was a fantastic free coffee stall last year. I was told it wasn't there this year as they expected the day to be too busy due to the PATH event.
I personally feel that the PATH event brought nothing to the track day.
I resent the fact that PCGB basically hired the track for the day and it was taken over in part by another event. I resent the fact that Knockhill were charging people money to get into an event that was paid for by members.
I hope next year is back to track only OR it's run properly as 2 completely separate events not a merged mashup as it was this year.

Flack jacket is on..

Archie

Spot on Archie. Your points are well made and perfectly valid.
Prior to the event I was keeping an open-mind about there being two events on the same day but now, looking back on it, I agree a track day should be just that - a track day - as it was in previous years, with free and unrestricted access for PCGB members who wish to spectate (irrespective of what car they turn up in!).

Signing on was a joke...people turning up after 9am !!! and drivers briefing... say no more ... Think it could have been done by Knockhill staff .. after all there the ones charging for the day ...and at the price charged by PCGB for the day they could have inc a lunch in the price
Just don't get it why Lotus on track /Javelin /etc can run there track days at least £50/60 cheaper than the club .. need a big rethink for next year ... only good thing was they weren't adding on crazy prices for non members (and most of us have been members for over 15/20 years but feel weve been let down by club on pricecy track days ) Rant over .....G ex club member
