PAS fault

Lucky really, could off snapped the alloy hanger from the engine.

Now I'm worried, it might have! [&:]

Glenn has sorted all the parts for me. The tensioner is only £7 more new than a used one, so that's a no-brainer, and the rad hose is about £20 so why bodge it by trying to repair a cut that almost right through the rubber? I also got the sleeves for the bolts, as they were so cheap it's not worth paying the garage the time to find the right size, or cut sleeves to size!

So, one question, as it's going in on Wednesday morning and it's a 5 mile drive. If I take the belt off, I run the risk of the pump hanging off the pipes doing damage there, but with the belt on it's cutting the hose more. Which is the lesser risk of causing more damage? [&o]

Get the AA to take you there? I seem to have a similar issue, not on and off but working properly and then quite stiff steering, not sure what it is, but with all the other issues I had with it after brake fluid mishap I wouldnt be surprised if it wasnt the PAS pump.

Mine seems to be coming out in sympathy too! I could have sworn the steering tightened up this morning, was going in a straight line but just changing lanes seemed really heavy - then fine again... Will add it to my list of things to keep an eye on [:)]

I wouldn't drive it at all, mainly due 2 the pump snapping the hanger or cracking it if it hasn't all ready. When mine broke it was fine did a parallel park and at full lock got a screaming noise, when I checked it was the hanger that broke.

A few weeks b4 I heard a pin noise, under the car, pulled over and checked and everything seemed fine, I'm convinced this was the bolt coming free shooting off. If u want to drive car there I would remove the pump, but by the time u done that MIT as well do the rest your self

Not a bad idea, Edd. I called them out today, as we have home start free with our membership, so why not use it? [:)]

I now have the belt removed, the pump securely tied up so it won't move, and the cooling system pressure-tested to check the hose is likely to be ok for a short journey. From what he could see the bracket is fine, it looks as simple as the nut falling off the end of the bolt, and the sleeve is lost. The tensioner has sheared at one end, not surprisingly when the pump moves freely!

I'm going to drive it myself, but the AA were happy to relay it there for me, and I can call that in if I need to. The problem is that you have to wait for them, and I need to be at work. The patrol today came within ten minutes, pretty good service, and we get 10% off for Club membership.
