Parrot Asteroid in 86 944 Turbo

ORIGINAL: A9XXC

Looks superb!

The tyre pressures are difficult as its on 17's, I would start at 30/36 and play!

A black Turbo on an E plate overtook me today on the M1 near Leicester about 4.00- whereabouts are you?

I am in west london

Nice looking wheels again and I think the black centres would suit the car. Not a great fan of 17 inch wheels on the 944 myself but hey that's just me. I think 16 inch look perfect. If you are dead set on running 17" then you should check that your car has 968 caster mounts. If not then I would get some fitted. They are a must when running 17" [:)]

hiya julian, a warm welcome, car looks great, any mods planned? and is your car the one that was for sale in london which had a full respray a little while back, either way you have lovely car and usually 36psi all round, regards and be careful this time of year, jason p

Julian
welcome
Can I say we have the same taste in cars, the same taste in ICE / Hands free kits, but different taste in wheels.
Find a nice set of 16" Teledials, or better still 951 Fuchs, - lovely car which will then drive like it should.

Guess who is going to pick up a set of 16" 7 & 8 Fuch tomorrow for my 220, okay then to save you all guessing..........me [;)]
They have white centres and anodised rims ( no refurb) question is what colour would suit my Kalahari Beige car, not sure about black, white would be okay, kalahari or possibly silver centres ?
Your thoughts gents ?
That means i may have some mint 16" turbo teledials for sale ?

Congratulations on your Porsche - it looks fantastic - the stereo is an excellent fit - I have a Sony and its just as blingy as the kenwoods (unless its turned off and the face plate is in the glovebox [:D])

About those 17" wheels - one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that there are a couple suspension component changes required when you put 17" wheels on in lieu of the standard 16" - and Porsche does not recommend 18" on any 944/951/968.

I saved the following info from a website I came across - If you do a search on 17" wheels you will probably find it. The part pasted below is apparently from official Porsche documentation..... Note Installation instructions Point 3 and part numbers further down.

You may want to confirm that your car has had the mounts changed. Then if stay with 17" you know you are OK and if you want to revert to factory then you know you need to return the rear mounts to original spec also.

As per Robwright's comment on the D90s (yes they are nice wheels) - remember that the Turbo came with 7.5Jx16 fronts and 9Jx16 rears while the S and S2s came with 7Jx16 fronts and 8Jx16 rears. There is also a ClubSport version of the D90s and were provided on Turbos - same dimensions I believe but a little different in appearance (vent holes are more triangular in shape and a little larger - more ventilation I suspect).

Good luck and enjoy your Porsche (p.s. - I like the look of the 17" wheels and you get a better selection of high performance road tires).

Here's the official Porsche statement on 17" wheels on 944/951s (ignore spacer info): ----------------------------

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Installation Information
1. Front and rear fender well lips must be reworked and/or checked for adequate tire clearance. See Fig. 1.

2. Suspension travel must also be checked. Parts such as brake lines, hoses and brackets must have adequate clearance.
3. New caster eccentrics, rear mounts and nuts must be installed in the front control arms. This change is necessary due to a change in caster specification on vehicles equipped with Porsche 17" wheels. The specification for vehicles equipped with 17" wheels is 3'-15'-45. See Fig. 2.
4. Vehicles must have a rear stabilizer bar.
5. When adjusting vehicles to new caster specification, all alignment values should be checked at that time.

6. When summer tires are used on vehicles with 17" Porsche wheels, snow chains cannot be used. If winter tires are used, only snow chains with Porsche Part Number 911 361 924 00 may be used.
7. Tire pressures for front and rear 17" Porsche wheels is to be set at 2.5 bar (36 PSI) at approximately 20'C (68'F).
8. When using this rim and tire combination, a 17mm spacer plate must be installed on the rear wheel hub. The customer must be informed that if the emergency wheel is needed, the spacer must be removed.

Bruce,
I suspect the sport D90's you refer to are CS Forged wheels which are a different animal from the D90's, yes they look similar to the D90 to the untrained eye but they are forged, lighter, and the spokes are about half the thickness of D90 when seen togetrher.
Fitted to all MO30 Chassis cars as part of the package.
Also fitted to some 928 models.

Mark I think you are right about the turbo forged alloys. They are a fine wheel. look like a D90 but are a forged construction and light as hell!! They also have a clean finish to them both front and rear i.e. the spokes are not inset from the rim both front and rear.

Never overly keen on D90's but the forged look great

Nice looking 944 Julian, very tidy and those black cup 1's would look nice [8D]

Its ok Rob - I love the D90's [:D]

There are also the "dustbin lids" I have on the 2.7, which are FORGED like the CS wheels, similar but not the same as the 928 S ones.

That wheel centre colour question.....

Kalahari with I imagine Black or Brown trim?

Viper Green would be slightly too brash, so what about:

White will not look like they "belong" on the car, but will pass as OK to most
Silver (as in popular wheel silver) not really
Gloss Black - looks like a replica wheel
Matt Black - safe, original, easy to keep, subtle, easy to apply without compromising the OE finish you have inherited

or if you want to be different and have Black trim
Atlas Grey / Anthracite

or Brown trim
Macademia metallic and do the Dash facia strip, to match

or a stripped out racer
Guards Red with Calipers and Belts to match - Lotus Gold Leaf theme (but you wouldn't do this to an Original '86)

More importantly, congratulation on a very rare set of wheels.

George
944t

Cheers George they are sat in the kitchen as i type, a few minor scuffs on the rims but nothing major, i do not care for black centres, no rush at the moment as they will not hit the streets until springtime.
The car has brown intrerior btw.
I am going to get the polished rims sorted and may stick with white until i decide waht colour to go.

Anthracite maybe? Id usually say dont mess about with Fuchs, bit white centred wheels were painted already, rather than anodised.

Also James - dont sell the 86 ATS 'dials, youll regret it.

Simon

Cheers Simon,
Got a bit giddy there the "Dials" are staying, probably going to attack the rims with a polishing kit, keep toying of a mad lary colour for the centres it would be reversible if required need to mess about with some colours.....we shall see.

Not the one you mention - I flew up to Aberdeen to buy it and then drove all the way back with no issues; other than tiredness! The car outperformed me.

Thank you for all your welcoming messages and discussion on the wheels. I have had it looked at by JazPorsche a good Porsche garage in London and they have checked all the mounts and wheel related stuff.

Black leather interior with black paint is not unusual, my last 944 was exactly that and the mileage was pretty similar too. if hours is half as good youll enjoy the car

regards mas

Though I am a new member here beg to disagree with you...I checked eBay, gumtree and AutoTrader for nearly a year and in that time I came across only two Turbos in black with black leather interior. Currently there is only one for sale in the Scottish Isles in that combo.
I do feel that black with black leather interior is one of the rarest combo's - so many red and white ones or ones with cloth interiors. When you do find a black one 99.9% of the time the interior is cream.

Cheers
Julian
