PA2000 Alarm. Both Handsets have Flat Batteries

This morning I checked the battery on the 993 and found it was alive and well after the winter.
I used the usual PA2000 handset to unset the alarm to find the light on the handset did not light. I then tried the other handset with unfortunately the same effect.
Has anyone had the same problem and how did they resole the issue.
I have sent off an email to Hamilton & Palmer for advice as well.
 
What's wrong with putting in new batteries?
That said, they last many years and it's a little suspicious that they have both failed over the same period
