OT but BMW advice required

Evening all !

Having had years of tinkering with and experience of the 944 Turbo, I'm trying to resurrect my daily driver = BMW E36 318i touring.

Long story but the timing chain has slipped due to a tensioner/guide rail failing. Car is now in bits in the garage and I've come to a halt.

I wondered by chance if anyone knows or knows someone who is familiar with the 318i M43 SOHC chain driven engine ?

I'm struggling to find TDC at the crank end - unlike the Porsche there are no obvious timing marks or lines to align. The camshaft is straightforward and I've ordered a special tool to sort this.

Any advice or suggestions very gratefully received !

BTW anyone need advice on doing belts, clutch, fuel/brake lines, changing turbo, or anything 944 related, I'm always happy to help out !

Belts , clutch , fuel and brake lines . Youve just listed some right 944 jobs there you will be popular :)

Yep fair old list of jobs there, however when it comes to the porsche, there is very little I haven't done on the car and can speak with considerable experience, particularly the awkward jobs !

Unlike a Beemer there are only a handful of specialised tools you need for working on the 944 !

Valves on no 1 shut ie: lobes upwards although it sounds like you are getting a locking tool which in my view you would need anyway and use a dial gauge to find TDC or a cable tie down the plug hole and carefully rotate back and forth until you find TDC but a dial gauge is the most accurate method.

Ive thought about this and yes you're spot on using the old fashioned method. I was rather hoping someone informed might be able to tell me how to accurately set TDC on the crank by using external timing marks. There is a 'stripe' on the crank pulley and and a mark on the casing but no idea how these match up relative to each other ?
