optimistic 944 owner

You have to admire the optimism of a person that buys a non running 944 and posts on a forum asking for help to get it started . He has absolutley no idea of which end of a spanner to use and about 3x pages of posts into a help thread, he casually remarks that the car has stood unused in a garage since 2004 ! wtf?[:(][]

Well I'm sure that hasn't any bearing on your non starting problem lol.....[:D][:D][:D]

He offers to test the voltage and sends you a picture of his 1920's bakerlite multimeter saying he is not sure which setting is for DC volts ![&o][&o][&o]...............

I think I'm in for a long haul........

Erm, Nick, either you've been sniffing the acetone again or I've missed something.

Which is it?

Oli.

I sometimes visit other 944 forums ...ahem ...[;)]

I'm currently trying to assist several owners with their starting and running issues and I thought I'd share with you lot one of those experiences .............simples

now don't go stirring things up Oli [:(] the op is a genuinely nice guy , just a tad naive . I don't want a load of us to go in there with our size 11's stamping on his sensitivities .[:D]

Nick,

I am directly descended from the Tsars of Russia, who had abnormally small feet (no, really). I believe this to be the reason for me having feet somewhere between sizes 5 1/2 and 6. Certainly not 11 .... so send me the link of the damned forum man! []

(Besides, I'm cold and need a laugh.)

Oli.

I do not have much interest in 944 starting problems, but I do like a 'good read' and this could be one of them, so I will second the request for the link![:)]

sorry chaps .....[;)] the first post was the story which I hoped would raise a chuckle or two on this cold and dreary Tuesday .
I'm helping this particular person by email not on that forum as there are too many spurious comments and silly suggestions which confuse the issue.

last night I asked him to check fuse 34 (fuel pump fuse) and to check for 12v at the coil with the ignition on .
I had already sent him a picture with an arrow showing him which multimeter setting was for DC volts and which for continuity. [:(][&o]

This morning I received the following message :-

'Hi Nick,
[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Where is terminal 15 on the coil?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Do I check fuse 34 (fuel pump) with the ignition on (not cranking) or off? (if off then I already tested that, no 12v+)[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

he's such a nice polite guy its a shame but without even the most basic electrical and mechanical skills I've told him I cannot help further. Jeez the car hasn't run for 9x years ffs [8|] can you imagine the amount of work that is needed ?! and he expects me to instruct him by emails . [:(]

Shame. He sounds like he has enthusiasm and is a nice chap. With a bit of mentoring and education he could go far.

Where is he based?

guessing east London too.

You guess correctly, squire!

(Having said that, I don't think there are many places 'round here that could have stored a car for 9 years, so I suspect he isn't local to me.)

Oli.

urrrrr United States [;)]

I know it sounds a shame but just bear in mind he doesn't have a clue how to test a fuse.........think about it[;)]

.... and that would have been me, once upon a time. And you too, Nick.

He's states based, eh? Given the friendliness of everyone on Rennlist I'd be surprised if he can't find someone local to him to help out. It strikes me from reading the forum over there that people are always driving significant distances to meet up and help each other. Something I'd like to think we could do more of in the UK 944 community. (To that end, if anyone has any 944 projects or issues anywhere local to me then do let me know - I'm always happy to come and have a laugh and wave a spanner or two in a fairly incompetent manner ... )

P.S. Rennlist - that's where the thread is, isn't it peanut? >OffTrawlRennlistforums<

thats not so Oli.

I started building and repairing valve radios when I was 9 years old. We used to strip prams and build downhill buggies with steering ,brakes etc at that age and repair our own bicycles.
By the time I was 16 I had 2x lambretta LI150 series 2 scooters which were completly stripped and rebuilt on a monthly basis .
What I'm trying to get at is that I had an extensive working knowledge of electrical and mechanical things by the time I left school. I've had 43 years since then to add to it so now I repair digital cameras laptops TV's washing machines everything you can put a name to.

This guy has never even tested a fuse before in his life . Where do you see a comparison ?
