(OPC Parts Catalog &) Serious play/waggle in Gear Stick

It was the linkage on top of the gearbox I meant when I said I could not get the individual plastic parts and had to replace the whole linkage. The gear lever end has had all the plastic bits replaced most I got free of charge from 944online in the US when ordering some other stuff, the gear lever itself was around £14 again from the US when the Dollar was weaker against the Pound. The gear lever movement is worse from side to side not front to back and probably moves around 1" in total when in gear, which may not be too bad just a lot more than more modern cars.ORIGINAL: Outrun944Blimey! Really? Oh dear! Did you try the joint rod also that connects just before the intermediate shift lever? It's part #29 on the above - it only costs £8 (how the shift level costs £100 extra I do not know!!!) I did on mine first, but it made no difference but I was told that can be a common cause - and cause of the cheap price of the part worth trying first. Out of interest, how much or how far can you waggle your gear stick? Before and after the work done?ORIGINAL: david924s I can agree the plastic parts from the rear linkage are not readily available and you have to buy the whole linkage did mine last year it cost around £120 I believe and the gear stick still waggles around, so be careful what you wish for as I replaced the front linkage and rear and the gear stick still moves from side to side. Maybe the next thing I replace is the sound deadening stuff under the gear linkage whch may hold it more steady.

Just ordered a new gearstick (£28+Vat) and bearing (£1.30+Vat) from OPC Cambridge and they will post them to me

The one at the bottom of the gearstick, I gave him the part number from the exploded diagram earlier in this thread (The first part of the conversation revolved around whether I wanted the leather or leatherette gearstick...no! the Metal bit inside.....)

Thanks DJ045, very useful Parts arrived today so popped outside after I finished work and had a go...25 mins later and it is all done! Back to lee-Enfield like precision hmmmm.... Whoever suggested filling the hole with a rag before you take the circlip off was bang-on, mine pinged straight downwards and was caught by the rag!
The old one was sooo worn!

Hello - also on this subject - I found a posting somewhere (I'll have to look for it - perhaps rennlist?) about installing a bushing from a 968 into the end of the shift rod. It didn't look that easy - pull the rod up far enough to get a drill bit through the hole in the rod to bore it out for the 968 bushing. The author claimed this was the absolute fix to worn shifter problems. Haven't done it myself so I can't vouch for it. Ok - found this site http://www.dietersmotorsports.com/tech/tech-july-03.htm Different posting than the one I read before but it installs a bushing just the same....

Firstly I want to say a big thank you to Mike who the previous the weekend graciously welcomed me into his garage and spent a good afternoon nattering and poking around each others 944 - it was very much appreciated and also for taking a look at the gear stick where we did find some play in that too - so thank you for that - obviously what Fat Albert found above too, did that make any significant difference mate? I've now replaced the gearbox linkage (intermediate shift lever) and it's certainly made a difference but not to the extent I was hoping for. There's now a nice resistant force and feedback when you push it to the RIGHT but pushing to the LEFT still feels very loose. When in gear there's still a fair amount of waggle room which is a shame, so I'll try the actual gear stick next and see how that works out. Most definitely though - 1) The intermediate shift level was severely shagged! Looking at it taken off ... sheesh ... there's a heck of a lot of play in it!! So it needed doing. 2) Just to confirm my previous worry and others about the OPC part - it does come complete in tact with the plastic cylinder despite not being labelled. I can totally understand why it is £100+ looking at it.

Yes, it has made a big difference and cured about 75% of the slop, I guess the other 25% is down the back end where you have been fiddling

Yes, very similar! as you can see from the photo, my pin was worn to resembling a gimbal, and had a good inch of waggle either side
