Oldest UK 944?

Hello everybody. If I may introduce myself, I am Sam and I am a new owner of, what I believe, is a very early Porsche 944.

My friend and I bought this car as a project to get it in nice condition and give it a good home. We bought the car for £700 and needs a bit of work, but that is part of the fun. The car was first registered in June 1982 and according to the website howmanyleft.com there are only 50 cars registered in 1982 left on the roads in the UK. Could this possibly be one of the oldest 944s in the country?

Basically with the condition of the car, lets just say I have taxed worse. The problems I need to sort out are as follows:

Electric fan not cutting in.
Indicators lighting up but not flashing.
Interior needs tidying up.
Radio and heater need fixing.
Passenger side window regulator needs replacing.
Drivers side door latch needs replacing.
Some tidying up to the bodywork.
And a good service :)

Hi Sam and welcome. It looks like you could have got a bargain for £700, esp. if the sills are solid!

Thank you for the warm welcome Andy. The bodywork is solid on this car, I have yet to find a speck of rust on it. Also I have been looking round it over the last few days to try and sum up a bit of its history and create a job list. That is when I found something rather interesting in the boot under the floor.

I did a little google search and apparently this is a tyre inflator from an early 911, is this correct? I haven't checked to see if it works yet.

That looks very nice - and from the initial pic looks pretty straight as well. I like the colour - quite unusal.

What's the interior like? Most of the original fabrics can be sourced again now, so if you need seats recovering it can be done. If you have an uncracked dashboard then it's a rare car indeed!

The interior lets the car down to be honest. The seats are torn which to be honest I expected in a car of this age. The dashboard seems pretty much in good condition apart from one small crack on the passenger side and one of the air vents has broken. We will be taking the seats out soon and will see if they can be repaired. I will try and get a picture later on. [:)]

Hi Sam,

I saw this car for sale and thought it was a bargain (I wasn't on the market for one but never stop looking).

Its a nice colour and I think could be brought back to life with not much work.

Sure someone will mention this but if its not been done recently, get the timing and balance belts replaced plus a good service always helps.

I can recommend a good upholsterer in Loughborough - if you're anywhere near..

Indicators lighting up but not flashing could be just the flasher unit in the fuse box under the bonnet - had mine fail on my 968 cab, dropped into Porsche Tonbridge, replacement supplied and fitted for about £11!

And I can show you where to buy replacement fabric for Vaughan to fit.

Great looking car Sam, love the colour.

I've got a very early one too. Mine is a late November 1981 manufacture. I'm in the process of stripping it out completely for classic rally purposes and am finding all kinds of odd things about it.

I'm currently waiting on paperwork so I can register the car with the FIA as a Class 3 classic rally car as they have to be pre Dec 31st 1981 to qualify.

I pulled out the foam padding at the very front of the passenger foot well yesterday and it had a big '1981' stamped onto it. I was kind of hoping that would satisfy the FIA and MSA scrutineers on its own but I think sadly not!

Has yours got an odd cooling setup too? Mine has got early 924 hoses and some odd clips here and there that were used on peer 911s as far as I know. It also had a bodged waterpump which looked to be factory done. It wasn't the normal early plastic impeller unit nor the later metal impellor pump but something else with a rather hand made looking fixing bracket.

My best find to date has been the seat spacers/lifters where the seats bolt into the captive nuts. Apparently they were made for production with nicely finished little spacers but mine were a bit Heath Robinson - they were a long row of washers wrapped up in some old Porsche branded cotton type tape. I chucked them away accidentally, wish I'd kept them now as they're an oddity that perhaps should have been kept with the car.

Righty ho, I'd better get back to my floorwell stripping!

Yes, any 1982 944 is rare now. The earliest I've ever come across is a pre-production model, with several bits that were cobbled off the 924. I'd be surprised if any pre-date that one, but there are only a handful of '82 cars left within the Register

Nice car Sam,
as you probably know they were all made by Audi and at that time their quality was top notch, its not bad since but I know my 1985 951 is better than various 1989 examples I know.
In ten years you can put a zero on the purchase price when you sell it if you keep Original [:)]
Good luck with it
George
