Oldest UK 944?

Thank you to everybody for the warm welcome :D

I will try now to respond individually to the questions asked.

I happened to come across the car one afternoon while on a lunch break at work and thought it was worth a look. I wasn't actually looking for a car either at the time, let alone a Porsche haha. But when I saw it I thought it was worth a look and my friend and I thought we needed a hobby. After a good tyre kicking and a test drive we decided to put a deposit on it and now the car is sitting in the warehouse where I work :) Well pleased with the investment. Plus the car was only 10 miles away from where I live so it was a bonus.

Yeah I have done a little research on the 944 with what to look for. I don't know a lot about them and to be honest I never thought I would ever own a German car, I usually prefer British cars over anything else and a lot of my car knowledge is on Jaguars, but as I was very impressed with this car I decided to snap at it and I hope to expand my knowledge of Porsche cars through this project :)

I am based in Alton in Hampshire. Loughborough might be a tad far. Luckily I work for an autofactors to I know many people in the trade where I can get certain jobs done, but as I have nothing much to do with my spare time at the moment I would love to do as many jobs on it as possible myself to stop me going mad :D haha.

But thank you very much for the offer, you help is greatly appreciated.

That is a fantastic price to be honest. I should be able to get it even cheaper through work though. By the looks of it somebody has been fiddling with relays and electrics before I bought the car as there are old relays and a couple of electrical bits in the glove box. :D

Wow, a fantastic project you have there. I have thought about building my own rally car in the past and the idea was there for the Porsche, but I think I would start off small with a competition car with something that I can get really cheap parts for. I have worked on old rally cars before including a Nova 1600 (quicker than it sounds) and a gorgeous MK2 Escort with a Cosworth Duratec engine and sequential gearbox, a serious bit of kit. Serviced for both of these cars at the North West Stages in Blackpool a couple of years ago. Also last year I helped build an FIA spec Ford Fiesta R2 rally car which was developed by M-Sport, a great car to work on and looked fantastic when it was finished.

In regards to your question. I am no Porsche expert. I have worked on a 924 in the past but I am not sure if I could spot any 924 parts on the 944. I did get a picture of the engine bay earlier if this helps.

to do with my spare time at the moment

which has now evaporated....:)

Those relays will include a replacement DME relay for emergency...they can be a bit unreliable

The 944 evolved from the 2/4 and in their early days were most similar.

Later on the 2/4 was reverse engineered from the 4/4 when it received the 2.5L engine, and the oval dash, in fact almost everything except the flares.

Do you know what the build number of your new car is - is it in the first 1000 produced for example?

Good luck with it

George
