Ok so I poked at a small hole now I have half a car in bits!

Well we all know as much as the 944 is galvanized that's great but it does not protect it 100%

It needed doing and if I didn't do it some one else would need to.. if I was to sell the car then that would be the place any informed 944 buyer would look..

So jumper off, sleeves rolled up.. get stuck in..

So I poked at a hole I think I mentioned it last year.. Sorry I don't do forums like I used to.. fingers burnt and all that. Plus I spent more time adding photo's to help others i didn't end up doing my own cars!

So I mentioned I had this hole behind the drivers door infront of the wheel. This is a cab BTW.

So it looked like water had dripped down over the years and collected in the bottome corner and then add some dust ( road dirt ) and it compackes nice and dam and rust comes to the party to spoil every thing..

So this is what I have got !

I made up the inner section first and then added on the outer

also on the front... I was shocjed at how much the sealant had added to the problem by retaining damp in this lower wing area and then it rusted.. so i have hacked out the sealant and alot of it.. to get to the metal.. I have cut away all the rusty part..

any one got a photo of this area pre rust to work from as reference as I don't have any as it's in a heap on the floor ( rusty dust ) LOL

As for the back I have made the panel but as i made it. I was not happy with the other part so had to cut that out as well and now I am going to have to add in another section but it will be covered over in stone chip so not too bad

So that's what brings me to my question

any advice on getting the right texture to match???????

I am going to be paint the car my self as well as the metal so it's just the stone chip I have concern over..

I have played about with a can of stone chip and as long as you speckle it on it's sort of some time thing like it but far from it.. if you know what I mean..

Sorry it looked like I know what I am doing with the stone chip..

I tried to match it on a scrap bit of metal..

So i am looking still on how to match it?

any ideas?

I'm not sure but I would think that the only way to get it to match would be to use the same product that Porsche used in the first place.So that would probably be a wurth product.So it's probably best to contact your local Wurth agent and ask them.

Wurth ( localy ) are a pain. As they want you to buy loads of their product..

I wouldn't mind I do want to buy like 7-8 tins for the 901's and the 356 if not more tins but the stone chip for the 944 is different If I remember a chat with a body shop mate years back it's some thing to do with a bag you mix..

but just wondered if some one else has already been down this route?

I removed all the stonechip, done my repairs and had my bodyshop apply stonechip and paint. Not sure what they used, but it's close to original and is all the same rather than patched in.

If I remember from previous posts you have a lot of experience in this type of repair so dont want to sound cheeky, but if you run along the top of stonechip with a knife and remove it all, you will be able to assess condition of complete sill.

People say they rust from inside out, but I would say it's just that the stonechip covers it up untill it's too late.

Worth checking.

The factory stoneguard is not sprayed on by aerosol, so to get a really good match you have to use a Shutz gun and vary the pressure and distance sprayed until you get a good match for your texture. I used Wurth SKS Stoneguard at the time but I think they've changed the name to Stone Chip Protection now

Loc944 your right the stone chip just hides the rust which is a shame as Porsche clearly wanted it to work and last.. Metal work and paint is my thing yes ( hobbie ) but stone chip has always been a pain!

good Idea about remove it all so it matches.. I never thought of that. I was looking to just paint to the top edge of the stone chip in 2pk paint. But I guess I could blend it right in..

I have had a camer up the sill area and it's still not too bad up there. just this one area that is common..

Ebay £14.99 for a camera on a flexi stick.. best buy for sure for these 944's

oh my next question then is about the stickers on the side of the car the stone chip protectors?

can you still buy them?

are they clear when new? or do you have to paint them?

I am tempted to try and paint over the top as it's just chiped alot and has a bit of heat damage from the welding paint would cover it..

I managed to get a close to original by using a paint-roller to get the ripple effect - not the big rollers for painting but the smaller ones looks the same just smaller and i used the smooth roller - all came in a pack from b and Q

LOL, funny I saved one the other day and was thinking I wonder if the fluffy one would do this.. but you recon the smooth.. I'll give that a go as well..

I have painted a VW bus with a roller and mopped it back it looked good and was dead cheap repaint! LOL so not a daft suggestion by any means.

cool - yeah use the smooth one - and just do it one way not for and back - ( im sure you know what im on about). few years back but the finish was good - and you had to look close twice to see the differents

I should imagine most 944's have gone there if not all the way accross the outer sill by now ,I know when I was looking
I couldnt find a decent rust free car for my money ,I bought one with rust showing but on inspection Its really not so bad
and will get onto it over winter ,what do you think of those repair panels on ebay (the outer sill and rear sill infront of the rear
wheel ?

I did see the Ebay panels but to be honest they are a 10mins make from scratch.

Normaly these when you get them you have to cut and shunt them to fit anyway so it's a waste of £40 I feel.. £4 of sheet steel.

Use cardboard to gut the template out and go from there.. to get the 90 degree upturn ( the edge ) use plyers to skrink the metal and then finish it off with a body hammer and a flat surface OK I have a few more tools but that is about the jist of it.

for the inside I cheated abit and didn't do a 90 degree all the way round just the flat secton and then I punched holes though so it is just like the factory weld.

YOu can pull and push metal around alot. I now have the factory curve as it's not flat as people think. I made the rear brackets last night so those need spot welding in now and then whole lot can be painted then.. I am going to drill a hole from the vent inside the door, so I can inject wax oil into that area as you can't get to it.. and then put a plug in .. it will then make the water just run out into the main sill area and out the drip vent Porsche put in..

I intend when i sell the car to show all this to the buyer then they know it's been done..

Good plan. I'd rather buy a car on which I can see someone's done a decent job of a rust repair, and protected it all, rather than an unknown quantity that might look fine on the surface and be all full of cardboard and GRP underneath.

Yes I got the Shutz gun from Wurth at the same time as the stoneguard paint. From memory it was about £15 and simply screws onto the top of the stoneguard bottle.

You can buy the clear stoneguard stickers from the usual parts suppliers, Porsche and also on Ebay. I have always made my own from a paper template and a large square sheet of Helicopter tape bought from Trident Racing Supplies at Silverstone. A large square is around £20 and has enough material to make a complete set of six stickers, with enough left over to make one or two Spares.

Wire wheel on the drill cleaned all that surface rust up nice.. so painted it all inside now..

Now to put abit of filler in the side there, don't need much as i managed to pull the 3 sections togeather nice.

I'm so far very pleased with the repair.. I have had a good poke around every where else as well and done some tidy up work there..

Its looking 10 times better the painting is not an issue for me it's still where to match up and blend the stone chip I think that stone guard is going to have to come off :-(

Looks like a decent repair. Also worth pointing out that it doesn't look like that area has had work before judging by the thinness of the stone chip etc round your repair. It'll look like new in no time.

Got to this part was a pain because I had no reference as it rusted away, the other side is not much better.

Im happy even if its not factory its not far off, I added in a water drain in the wing as this should help. Im also going to put a plate in front of the corner to protect it from all the road dirt getting into the corner to rot..
