OK, but who has ordered one?

There is a thread on here with numerous, in-depth, posts about the pros and cons of the 987 v 981 Cayman.

But what we all want to know is which of you guys has bitten the financial bullet and actually ordered a new 981 Cayman?

I just rang East London OPC and they have sold out their March allocation already.

Buying sight unseen? Not for me thanks David. Much better to wait for 12 months to let Porsche and its suppliers sort out any component and build issues on a new car. And it will have to be significantly better than my 987 to stump up the extra cash too. Good luck to anyone who takes the plunge though. Jeff

I agree with Jeff although I am pretty sure it will be significantly better than the 987 judging by the Gen II over the Gen I ,so for me apart from the cost its a question of not wanting to part with such a fantastic car. I don't expect there will be many component design flaws during the first year of production, such is Porsche's thorough development phase, my car has had 2 mechanical recalls since new (one has only just been issued: clutch switch) and one for PCM 3 and it was built 3 months after launch. A lot is shared with Boxster and 991 after all which has been out at almost one year by the time Caymans start to get built in Jan/ Feb.

Granted Chris, but the line workers still have to get used to building a new variant and it's a new production line in Osnabruck too, although they will have had the benefit of 6 months of Boxster production by March 2013. OK then, give it 6 months. Just in time for a 63 registration..! Probably still too soon though to negotiate a decent discount. I wouldn't have expected too many problems with our Gen II cars since the only major revision was the introduction of the DFI engine, introduced about a year earlier on the 911. Jeff

I think 6 months is safe Jeff and the main point we also agree on is the price, for me I was lucky to find a used GEN II with a few hundred miles on, but if demand for the 981 is stronger then the 987, as is expected then there may not be many appearing on the second hand market, or discounts available for at least the first 12 months. I think I'll wait until after the launch and then either if I see a Gen2 ( when values have been hit ) with a spec I like or until my Gen1 has gone well past the 100K and then look at a Gen3. Trouble is, I don't see many Cayman S's with specs I like.

I have slight problem of finishing paying for my my '11 cayman first, but the 981 S in yellow would be very tempting. Would also want to wait until the sports exhaust is available as well. (yes i am that much of a kid!)

smiffy OK my Spec is: "S", White ext. with black interior, Sport Seats Plus, 20 in Carrera S wheels, Sports Steering Wheel, Tyre Press Mon., Rear Parking Sensors, Mobile Phone Prep, Cruise Control, Folding Mirrors, Climate, Sound Upgrade Package, Red Seat Belts, Mats. Still undecided about PCM, my current Cayman has it but I didn't spec that. I have found it useful for trips to Europe where it works better than in the UK. I have been looking round for add on SatNav devices and a TomTom 825 Europe is 200 pds plus you have to buy traffic updates after the first year at 7.99 p.m. or 96 per year. I would rather have the integrated system as I know I will miss it, but would I get my 2,142 pds back when I come to sell the car? I doubt it, perhaps it would sell more easily than without. Are you having a wobble re PCM Chris? The TomTom LIVE Services certainly is useful for updating your route if there's heavy congestion (£47.50 per/year). Does PCM include that feature? Also, if you purchase the £80 Lifetime Map Update Service, you always have the latest maps for the the life of the product (whatever that means!) - and it's free at the moment..! Are annual map updates included when you purchace PCM? £2,142 buys a lot of TomTom options..! The only problem is that a TomTom's not so nicely integrated as PCM; but you pay your money and take your choice. Jeff

It's a tough decision. PCM is expensive for the subset of it's features that one typically uses. But, the trailing wires of a sat nav and the occassional dropping off the windscreen might make you wish you had. I think that's how they price these things. How badly does one want to avoid trailing wires in such a beautiful cabin and how often do they use their sat nav. The more you use a sat nav the more unsightly it is but then the more you might want the benefits of a Tom Tom subscription as Jeff describes. It's a tough one.

PCM is now standard on the 991 and I think its a bigger omission not to select PCM on the 981 series than it was on the 987. You also get a compass rose showing your heading when you press the CAR button[] I doubt I will get my money back come resale but I decided to add PCM to my spec and its now been confirmed.

When ordering a new car of this value.......get what YOU want. Otherwise you'll regret it! Sounds like a great spec to me......one I will deffo' buy when it appears on the 2nd hand market in 2 yrs time.

I won't be selling in 2 yrs time, whatever gave anyone that idea. Yes, my Gen II is under 4 yrs old, still has warranty and will make someone a great car. I'm surprised no one has expressed interest, you Gen I guys dont know what you are missing[] Kevan, I dont drive that much in the dark so cant justify it. I had a car with autorain sensing wipers and spent time wondering if it was going to work, or not. Its a bit like using the Sat Nav to navigate somewhere you know just to see which route it picks. So I'm happy with the spec.
