Oil Pressure

Hi All
Can anyone tell me why I have 5+ Bar of oil pressure, with the ignition on, whether or not the wires are even on the sender?
There is no short to earth on either wire to the sender.
There is just under 5v on one wire to the sender, nothing on the other.
Cant make sense of wiring diagram, car is 2.7 1989.
Cheers

Sounds like your gauge could be dodgy Mike with it going to full delfection with minimal volts. One of mine does it sometimes. Alasdair

Hi Mike, A long time since I had this problem ( about 15 years ) and it was on a 924S, had problems on a 944 turbo and a 944S too. In fact I've had problems with a couple of senders one actually leaked through the body and to be honest the cars have got a bit mixed up in my memory as being down in the engine bay they look so alike close up and getting to feel personal! Try changing the sender then if you still have the problem remove the instrument cluster and peel the membrane off the back to remove the instrument itself. You should be able to get a replacement from PH Sportscars at Shardlow about 20 miles from you, or alternatively try the other usual suspects. changed the sender then found it needed a replacement gauge to fix it but didn't get around to changing the sender back to prove it out

Thanks guys for the ideas, however I have just changed the instrument pod, with the same results (I waited until I'd swapped them before posting) and it goes to full even with the sender disconnected.

it goes to full even with the sender disconnected.
I thought they default to 5, hence people advertising cars with "5 bar oil pressure all the time" when it's a dodgy sender or gauge. The same as the heater defaulting to "full on", usually in the middle of Summer.

New sender needed surely? Duff sender defaults to max and open circuit the same hence your results. I had a duff sender on my old S and that read max until it was fixed.

I am not an expert on this but I also believe that the gauge defaults to full deflection and the sender sends the signal that pulls it down to where it ought to be. So my guess would be a dodgy sender. Mine did this for a while, and Andy at Promax fixed it with a new sender.

Thanks, didn't know the default is max I have a sender that was working off my old 2.5 will have to find it now!

Just had to change the sender on mine. Depends on the mode of sender failure. My last one failed 15 months ago and that failed with the gauge reading a solid 5 bar even with the engine not running. Change the sender for an FAE unit and problem solved. 15 months later, suddenly pressure drops to 3 bar and oil light comes on at tickover! Engine sounds OK but check oil pressure with test gauge. 5 bar hot at 1500 rpm, up to 8 bar cold at 2500 rpm. Bought new sender from Rock Auto and fitted it, problem solved. Sender from Rock is a Uro one which looks much better quality and looks more like the OE one that was originally fitted.
