Oil pressure checking

A 944 has come up for sale local to me. Seller's recently bought a 911 turbo & has other cars so is selling the 944 that he's only owned for 9 months or so. There is little service history. If it was miles away I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought, but no harm in checking this one out.

The oil pressure gauge doesn't work. I might be able to take the car to a local mechanic,- but I'm sure some of you will know the likely fault;- what should the diagnosis order be please?

Is the pressure peggaed at 5 as soon as the ignition is on? - that's the usual result of a faulty sender.

The fix is either
1. re-connect the wires to the sender!
2. new sender

Either way it's not a major job, but a bit of a risk to buy without sorting.

Fixing the oil pressure gauge is unlikely to be difficult, but I'd want to see some evidence of good oil pressure before buying the car.

That could be done by fixing the gauge before purchase, of plugging another gauge in (a mechanical one perhaps), or something else. But buying a car with unknown oil pressure would be a gamble.

Thanks chaps. Went to see it, seller was excellent chap, had found out from someone else interested in it that the car had been CAT C'd back in 2002, unbeknown to him. So he called me in advance of visit so I had the option of cancelling. Since it was local, I went anyway & had a drive.
Based on that car, I was a bit disappointed with a 1st drive of a 944, but I was liking it a little more as I got more familiar with it. I thought the clutch very 'springy' & the car pretty noisy inside. This particular example had a burgundy interior & a brown centre console, so it hadn't been kept in the best of nick.
Any comments on my observations?

As far as the oil gauge was concerned, it didn't register at all, the red warning light was 'on', as was the abs light.
Does that tell you anything?

When he found out about the CAT C situation, the seller contacted the Garage that sold it to him, & they're maybe going to take it back.

I think it tells you to walk away.....

I should have been clearer. I said "no".
Prior to going to see the local car I was considering a car in Ireland. It needs money spent on paint in at least 3 places & the gearbox linkage sorted, but if I'd liked the general impression of the "local" car I might've gone to Ireland. Now though, I'm not sure if I want a 944 at all?

"SE" specs... is it only Turbo's ? Does an S2 only come in one spec?

Yes, only one spec for S2's. It's called "BetterThanAllTheRest", sometimes called "BTATR".

OK, and a serious answer ... yes, there was such a thing as an S2 SE. It had a chip and a nice steering wheel, and a couple of other extras (could have had M474, can't remember.) Do a search on here and you'll see what I mean. There were about 30 of them made, and were (I think) stock S2's with the extras stuck on by Porsche GB (as opposed to by Porsche Germany at the factory), right at the end of the production run, to sell the last few that were still flapping around in showrooms. They claim 250bhp, but this is unproven.

225bhp I thought?
You could be right. Stock is 211 (I think.)

211 to 225 is more believable. Mine did nearly 220 (unchipped) at the last dyno day. But then, don't promax claim 250 from their chip?
