Oil cooler seal

The heatshield above the oil cooler has snapped at the mounts and I need to get in there to get it out and repaired. Whilst I'm under there I've noticed a tiny weep of coolant from what I think is the OPRV (no oil in coolant or owt like that) so am considering changing the cooler seals "while I'm in there."

Once I've drained the coolant it seems pretty straightforward to do and possibly without removing the exhaust manifolds too, we'll see. There is mention of using the correct alignment tool and also of not needing it so wondered if anyone had any advice/experience as I'm loath to spend £30-odd quid on a tool I'll use once!

Thanks in advance, David

Rob Wright is wanting to borrow the tool I have Dave but you are more than welcome for a loan.

Dave it would be far easier also with the manifolds removed. I have mine off now if you see my engine rebuild thread it may help. If you need to talk through anything then let me know. There are not too many seals to replace on the Turbo oil cooler.

My manifold nuts look like they've been there since time immemorial, time to start the WD40-ing methinks!

When Rob's finished maybe he could post straight to me, I'll do the work on the car and then send it on to Alasdair plus whatever I can think of nearer the time to include by way of thanks?

Any other pitfalls I need to know? I've got the cooler seal kit but didn't know if this included new seals for the OPRV?

My manifold nuts looked exactly the same mate but a quick soak in WD and they came off no trouble at all. The sealing ring for the base of the OPRV does come in the kit but the O ring for the end of the OPRV doesn't unfortunately. I selected a suitably sized one from my kits at work. I would be happy to pass Alasdair's tool on mate (ooerr fnarr fnarr) if he is happy with that. It can make its way back up the country slowly to Bonnybridge.

Do you still need the tool mate? I received it in the post from Alasdair yesterday and fitted mine last night. Get in touch to let me know please mate. Number is in the signature.

Despite the fact that Ed China uses it it isnt a very good penetrating fluid as its really fish oil.

Diesel and paraffin mixed is also very good.

Use Plus Gas which is very very good and if in doubt get a plumbers hand held blow torch and heat the nuts. Cooling them quick with a wet rag sometimes shocks the bond.
