Oil cooler gasket

Hello all, i am having a long running problem with my car, i keep getting oil in the water, no water in oil (phew) but it is only a matter of time if i am getting it going one way.

The engine is from a 1989 3l s2.

I have changed the gasket where the internal oil cooler would be on the 2.5.

Whilst i did that i noticed that the little bit of pipe that oil goes through didnt project very far into the outer casing, and the gasket set came with 2 o rings which i presume should go on each end of this tube. So i think this is where my problem is.

Anyway i thought i had cured the problem with the gasket but i am starting to get oil in the water again, grrr.

My question is can you get replacement tubes as the one in there was very tight and i fear that if i got pair of grips on it to pull it out i would burr it up and it wouldn't seal.

Should this tube be shimmed out from the block in a similar manner to the oil cooler on a 2.5 in order for the o ring to seal at both the block side and the outer casing? As to me it doesn't look like it is projecting far enough into the outer casing at present.

Or am i missing something else that could be causing the transfer of oil into the water.

Sorry for the garbled rant i hope somebody can help as i don't feel like i am getting anywhere with this car.

I thought oil in the water on an S2 was more likely to be the head gasket, rather than the oil cooler housing...

Probably not what you wanted to hear...
 
Check the head gasket. They have a tendancy to rot and let the oil and water mix but without actually lossing compression.

Take a look at my engine build thread 'Building a 400+BHP 2.5ltr 944 Turbo', I give some details that may help answer at least some of your questions, page 6 covers the oil cooler.
The tube you mention is available as a seperate item as it was upgraded although the S2 probably has the new part already fitted.
Molgrips are fine to remove the tube, the rubber 'O' rings do the sealing so a little nick out of the tube won't do it any harm but of course be as careful as you can. There was a Porsche bulletin that stated if the recess in the block for the tube is more than 14.2mm to fit a suitable washer held secure with iirc loctite 638 until you achieve the correct depth for the tube to be refitted into. edit: forgot to add that I wrapped the tube in cloth before using molgrips to twist the tube loose and then pull to remove.
 
Thank you very much for the replies, i will strip the oil cooler gaskets out again and check the depth that the tube protrudes and the depth of the recess in the block when i get a bit more porsche fixing energy.

I know this is a daft question but i am presuming that to check for a headgasket failure that isn't affecting compression i would have to strip the head off, that doesn't appeal! but if it has to be done i guess that will entertain me for a few of these winter nights that are just around the corner.
