Oil catch can

So the bodywork is progressing nicely and the next steps are fitting an interior and giving the engine bay a tickle over.

My mechanic (and ex-944 turbo owner) has said that I should fit an oil catch can but there seems to be 2 types. The type that fits inline with the hoses and vents back into the j-boot or the Lindsay type that Promax sell where the can vents to atmosphere via a breather filter.

Anyone got any experience of either type and why? I asked my mechanic which type he had fitted but he couldn't remember.

Eh, i don't get that, i spoke with him last night regarding them & he was basically saying that there a waste of time ??!!! [8|]

I didn't speak to the person you're thinking of or indeed at the garage you're thinking of ;)

Crankcase shouldn't vent to atmosphere should it? Plumb it back into the J-boot. I never caught much in my catch can (in fact I may still have it Dave if you're interested)

Get lots in my catch can, might be something to do with state of the engine! However I think it is a good idea anyway because of the cr*p that forms in the metal pipe under the manifold. You get rust, carbon and other nastiness that if it decides to move will go straight into the J boot right in front of the turbo cold side - Its not going to happen at low revs so can be very messy - I think it is what took out my original turbo. Well worth cleaning out the pipe if you ever have the inlet manifold off as well. Tony

On my red car,I have a catch can behind the wing liner, there is a tap if i reach up behind the sill, that i can undo every now and then to release any fluid that gathers in the can,it doesnt smell nice[:'(]

Edd - yes interested, pm me please :) Just seems that the 9xx one and Lindsay one is a vent to atmosphere but all the others are recirculating. Engine is on 165k so worth putting one in (and when I pull the inlet manifold I'll clean that pipe out - thanks for the tip) but confused over which type :(

I added a Promax to atmosphere CC system some years back. Reason for this was to protect the Sci Vision from Oil Mist in the intake. It taught me the benefit of vacuum on piston ring sealing, and the windage benefit of inlet vacuum. My engine became more thirsty for Oil (1L / 800 miles) as opposed to 1L / 1250 miles when running a catch can vented to atmosphere. More recently, I have learned an SPS turbo and Perfect Bore block will use no oil and does not need a catch can. Aside from the metal pipe buildup described by 944Turbo above, I would regard them as a gimmick. Perhaps remove and clean the pipe periodically or fabricate a stainless replacement? George 944t

ORIGINAL: Frenchy Aye, which pipe ?
Its the larger metal pipe that runs under the inlet manifold - IIRC there is a rubber pipe between it and the air/oil separator and from the metal pipe to the J boot

those extra rubber pipes (w-sae 100r6 printed on them) on my car run to the inner wing where my catch can is hiding

found some pictures of where my catch can is hidden

Its in front of the passenger side wheel on a right hand drive car bracket was drilled to suit existing holes in car

I drilled the bat wing so I could drain it conveniently.

ORIGINAL: MarkK Lovely.... That lovely white new coolant tank makes me feel all funny[:D]
I understand that the current models are relatively non-yellowing too! Bought a new in in 1994 and it was yellow within a month or so...

One thing with oil catch cans is that they should theoretically be installed at the upmost point of the breather system, so that vapours are aspirated up into the can, which will then make its job of holding the oil/fuel residues before letting the air get back into the air intake. I have mine in front of the engine, and even if the amount of liquid is anecdotical thanks to an engine in very good shape, whenever I take the system apart to clean it I can feel a certain damp on the inner walls of the rubber hose going from the top of the AOS to the catch can, which incidentally is the highest point on my engine where recirculated gases will flow.
