I need to get a new starter motor as the current one is slow and knackered.

Has anyone got any wisdom on the WOSP high torque after market ones?

Will it be alright on the 944S2?

Looking on design 911 they seem to have a specific OEM one for the S2 (identical to the Porsche part but £300 instead £1200 as usual) does anyone know whether it makes any difference or can any be used without damaging the car?

I put a new starter on my turbo around 3 years ago. Think it was around £100 exchange, don't over think it.

I was thinking the high torque models might work better but it’s probably marketing etc.

The S2 has higher compression than a turbo, so maybe it requires a different starter. But it's unlikely Design 911 are the cheapest...

I have the WOSP starter on mine as I needed one and it was used and cheaper than a stock one at the time. It needs a little bit of tweaking to the exciter connector but otherwise a direct bolt-up.

If not urgent, suggest check for local auto electrician and ask them for refurb price. Had several refurbed over the years and all gave years of subsequent service and far lower cost.

There is a guy who is known to the forum called Martin that refurbs starter motors.

For what it's worth, I bought a brand new OEG PPEU17280N starter motor of Amazon in 2022 to replace my very tired slow original Porsche for £54.
It's performed brilliantly and my engine is a high compression 12.5:1 2.82 stroker (originally a 2.5S 16v fitted with S2 crank)
I've looked and it's no longer available, but a WAI 17280N is available from Arnold Clark auto parts for £75.

Like a lot of parts, I doubt Porsche manufacture starter motors. That Porsche box adds plenty of £££.

I replaced mine at Christmas, or rather I didn't in the end. I bought a new, hi torque, one from autodoc but the solenoid terminal layout didn't fit the turbo wires, even though the listing said it was compatible. You have 2 different positions by turning the solenoid but I needed the third! I assume the layout would fit an S2 but I don't have one so can't check.
Also don't assume your local auto electrician will do that sort of hardware now. Nothing local to me would. Most seem to just want to fit dashcams and parking sensors. I had to send mine by post to Gloucester to get it done. But once refitted all was well.
