bloody hell

driving along today and noticed my odometer has stopped truning over and recording distance.

I used the trip reset recently and don'tknow if that has had anything to do with it not working suddenly.

thought such things never go wrong.

can someone offer some tips to get it working again or is strip and looksy required.

pressing the reset button again and again has not strartled it back into action.

Oh Bugger

Did you press the reset button while on the move ? If so most likely the cogs have been stripped - its something I was warned against many moons ago. [&:]

I don't remember in truth but cant say that I haven't prior to this either.

is that really the case?

surely the germans are better than that design fault

Square or oval dash?
Is it the trip and the odometer or just the trip?
Usually its just gears sliding out of place.

It's not really a design fault, just that the plastic goes brittle over twenty-plus years and not re-setting it whilst the tiny parts are spinning around is more sympathetic.

You can take the dash out (easy) and get into the "pod" (easyish - reassembly is a bit more difficult!) and see the gears from there, as both have stopped working you may have moved the gear, broken just a tooth off or even the whole gear.

It's almost definitely that little cog broken. I bought my replacement from a company in the US:

Extorsion but a speedy delivery/good part. It was really easy to replace (less than 30mins) and that was the first time I'd ever taken a dash out of a 944.

However, no hurry if you are on a limited mileage policy ;)
