Odd wiper fault

Hi all,

I had a long drive yesterday, through everything from sunshine to heavy rain. The wipers got used on all three speeds, and various intermittent speeds, they were on and off all the time.

Several times, whilst not using them, the wipers started on intermittent with no warning. Flicking the switch up and down did turn them off, but it's obviously not right. Is it possible to clean up the contacts on the wiper switch, and is this going to be the problem?

I don't really want to just change it, this is the second one on the car in my ownership as the last on was doing very odd things with the lights and indicators. Another used one is likely to have it's own problems, now or in the near future.
 
Intermittent wipe problems always stir fond memories of a Morris 8 we had as students. Although a '40s car (it was a Series E), it too had intermittent wipe...the wipers just worked randomly from time to time, usually when we'd gone over a bump. And on a dry day of course......!

Seriously, interested to see how you get on...my wiper switch feels worryingly loose, but still has all functions. Am I right in thinking these are still available but at a price?
 
Hi Paul... Ive never had a 944 switch apart but I have had my Volvo one down to its bare bones ! Be very careful taking it apart as springs and stuff will just take off (Wonder how I know that[:mad:]) ... If you have the other switch which is faulty then strip it first and you will know whats in front of you. Then you can strip the one on the car and clean it all up using contact cleaner and make one good out of two bad

The reason for Grahams trouble with the looseness is probably a broken top or bottom locating/pivot tab.. Id say its just the arm itself needs replaced in Grahams case ! eBay time perhaps...! [:D]
 
you need to switch one up -
lever all down activates the intervall (you can change speed on the scroll wheel).

allway down and then one up switches it off ;-)

 
Last Winter after leaving my car standing for a month or so outside with no use the wipers went strange the intermittant would work but not switch off unless I moved the lever to one of the other speeds similarly from any of the normal speeds there was little or no return on the wiper arm. I basically soaked the unit with WD40 and 3 in 1 with a cloth underneath to catch the drips and it seemed to free itself off and has worked ever since.

It's in the right position, just it's occasionally making a contact it shouldn't when in the "off" position.

I've not got a spare to play with, it was replaced at it's service. Symptoms are exactly as David had, so it looks like it's worth a try to fix it. Thanks! [:)]
 
In reality if it had not been the middle of Winter and freezing I might have removed the wiper unit and soaked it out of the car but as it was I removed the cowling around the steering column as best as I could and sprayed relaesing agent into the unit like I said but be careful it goes every where so have plenty of clothes and leave them on the floor mats to catch any drips.
