Odd vibration

Coming home tonight, I accelerated flat out from a motorway slip road to get past a slow van, and hit a fairly decent-sized pothole. I immediately got a small but noticable vibration, like a wheel-balance issue, at all speeds from 0-60.

Fair enough, could be anything from a lost balance weight to a damaged tyre or rim; that's one for tomorrow and daylight. But, it disappeared after a couple of miles. That would seem unlikely to happen if there was damage to a wheel.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if it was the flat-out acceleration rather than the pothole, could it be balance belt or engine mount?

I can't think of anything that would cause a vibration then go away, but if it comes back I'd remember to make a note of exactly where this crater was in case you need to write a 'strongly worded letter' to the council[;)]

I'd probably lose that one, as it's in roadworks so a pothole might well be expected! [&o]

My impatience having a dithering van in the way, and two lanes off the sliproad, would not usually be a problem. Just that they've been digging up the road so I was in the lane with rough tarmac and "raised ironworks". Flat-out was probably not the best way to get past him in hindsight....even though it was only flat-out in second.
 
Paul very strange. I had a very similar thing on Sunday left Reigate in the morning car loaded with wife and teenagers and banged along the m25/m40 to High Wycombe car was smooth and very nice. Stopped had a long lunch, loaded everybody in. As Soon as I hit M40 and got up to 50/60/70/80 really bad vibration from the steering wheel which continued when I braked as well. So first services I stopped and got out and gave the wheels a good kick as I though maybe loose wheel nuts. Anyway everything secure so continued. Well the vibration reduced considerably as the car/ tyres etc warmed up. It was still there butfaint. I think at first opportunity I will get a wheel balance. I wonder as the air warms up in the tyres do they balance out a bit. Ian
 
Interesting one. Could you have picked up something from the pothole, which later fell off? Maybe a blob of tar got stuck to the tyre or something was wedged in between the tyre and the wheel?

If all is well now then I wouldn't worry about it. And go more gently next time ...

When did it happen? Monday night, around 6.20pm? I'm sure I felt the ground wobble a little then as well ... and it wasn't alcohol-induced either! [;)])

Check your tyre pressures. After my vibration episode I checked mine last night as I had exhausted all visible causes (yes I know I should had thought of this before) and the left front was considerably down. May have slow leak. Pumped it up and now all good. Must say when looking at the tyre, the pressure difference wasn't particularly noticeable. Ian
 
The car's booked in next week, so I'll hopefully get an answer for this. It's certainly annoying me now, as it's happened a few times with no obvious cause.

A couple of people have suggested a failed wheel bearing, that's causing vibration when in one position but then moves back to it's proper place. I certainly have a grumbling noise from the back that sounds like a bearing on it's way out. SO far the three things that have caused it to start vibrating are the original pothole (although this was O/S front wheel and the grumbling bearing sounds N/S rear), a left-handed curve taken enthusiastically, and a roundabout followed by a left-hand bend taken rather more enthusiastically than I should have. [&:]
 
I had a front wheel bearing problem in the turbo that we thought was a rear... cost ££ to replace both rear bearings, but it turned out to be the front - diagnosed eventually by promax - I turned to them as we had run out of ideas..

It wasn't badly worn, but it caused a vibration at speed, which disappeared when you steered left.
 
I noticed that I have a bad steering wheel vibration at about 60-70 mph that disappears when you push past 70mph (allegedly).

Going to try the tyre pressures, wheel balancing and tie rod ends for play for a start and see where I end up!
