hi guys

If you see this in WHS I can say that IMHO it's worth the money, lots on 944's including an article celebrating 35 years of 944's, modified 944 and buyers guide, plus some interesting articles on the car. A good letter from the owner of Gmund Cars, Andrew Mearns, about the future values and desirability of these cars, evidently he has customers seeking such cars from his showroom, a showroom I might add, that in another recent article that I have read about this company, has some cars worth millions on display, is the 944 finally finding it's rightful place? The magazine has also started a new 'project' series which will follow the restoration of a 1986 Turbo which I have to say looks in a pretty sad state....I'll be following this with much interest.....here's the cover for those interested..

cheers Pete,,
i grab one of those,,,
Still really liking new mag "classic cars",,
nice story about quentin W missing out on a lovely 70s Sl on factory hubs and period bronze with low miles and hardtop,, lovely condition for a tad over £7.5K,,,,jasonp

I don't buy many car mags, this one was brought to my attention on FB..I found a copy in WHS this afternoon and after a quick browse parted with my cash, well worth it IMHO...I may subscribe now just to keep tabs on the Turbo restoration. It's a real mess but as the author states, once he discovered it was a 'Turbo' it was a game changer, he had to have it. It also has the all important matching numbers and it's Guards Red....perfection....:)
I like Quentin's articles, he did that one recently that included 944's, shame it didn't contain a turbo too.

cheers

Pete

yep,,,thats the mag,,he went for the 911 sc and the author went with the 944,,,,,
good mag and just subscribed,,,,,jasonp

I wonder how many miles it would have had on the clock...

Just ordered myself a backdated issue of last months and a full year subscription so that I can follow the 944 turbo restoration. (Peter your always making me spend money!, I only looked as I saw your name in my email Alerts and quickly read your post as I thought it was an update on your car ! ??

Sorry Daniel....hope you enjoy the read as much as I......I'm afraid no concrete update on my car yet ....the ride has been a little more bearable since reducing the pressure in each tyre by 6psi, drove her down to Didcot over the weekend which wasn't too bad a ride ...I have been looking at tyre options while awaiting some time on my son's ramp...he's a very busy man these days working flat out even this bank holiday... tyre choice seems to be getting harder for my sizes if wanting at least ZR rated...I'm currently toying with Dunlop SP sport Maxxt which are at least available in both sizes, have a higher speed rating(probably a good idea), good performance in the wet and reasonable sound...not too dear either, I'll ask my son for his opinion before parting with any cash, after all he wasn't impressed with my last choice of Bridgstones which he has proven to be correct on.

Pete

Hi Pete,
have you lookwd into continental contact 2/3?

thats what I've got but don't think there cheap

Hi Daniel

Thanks for the suggestion..I just took a quick look at these, a little cheaper than the Dunlops but not sure they are what I want or need...the info states that they are for luxury cars which surprises me considering their noise rating of 71 DB's..the Dunlops are 67DB's for comparison but more importantly they are designed around race technology with superior braking/handling which I would prefer, I particularly like the built in braking blocks for shorter braking distances... They do seem quite an impressive tyre, Dunlop is new to me, I have just spoken to my son who only has good things to say about the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT's, unlike his annoyance of me buying the Bridgestone's two years ago...If I had stuck with Goodyears I wouldn't be requiring a new set now...lol

Hi Pete,

very interesting! I didn't even look into noise rating or braking Differences.

The dunlops sound like a no brained then mate and if you do and report your happy then they sound like the tyre I will use next, which to be honest I think once I rebuild my engine and get to testing in the road, im worried that it's been standing for nearly two years that I may have to change my tryre also due to flat spots?? I'm praying not but that is my gut feeling as I didn't set the car up off the floor when I pulled the engine out of pure frustration of what damage they did after all I had rebuilt top end, I just left the tyres on the ground and on a tilt so may have ruined my brand new continentals in doing so? We will see....

all the best
daniel

if they went completely flat then yes it is probably best to change them...I'm wondering why they went flat though? My rears went flat during it's 4 years off the road but they were leaking around the valves and had been for some time prior to taking the car off the road, the fronts remained inflated throughout this time though.
I'm not saying that the Dunlop's are the best, I haven't checked all tyres but I do like what I have read about them so far, I'm sure there are better out there although they may cost a lot more.

Pete

No , what I meant is that becuase they were just sat on a flat serfice this being my garage floor, with the car static and not mooved once, I'm worried I will have developed a flat spot where they contacted the floor all this time withought mooving the tyres round at all. Plus i had the car jacked up on two wheels sideways so two tyres on one side was tilted on the floor and the otherside up on ramp stands in order for me to get underneth on my back to take torque tube , exhaust bell housing ect. And that's the way it stayed for year and half me not thinking of the tyres mat take the shape they were squashed to ?

I did pump the tyres up once once I realised what I should have done though. I think I put in around 55 in each just to try and hope that it may stretch out any small flat spots I may have caused??

daniel

ah..I see...yes that could cause damage to the sidewall....add heat and cold influence during it's hibernation and yes best to change the tyres....

Back on topic sort of, Sept GT Porsche mag has an article on Tims 3.0 16v turbo. I wonder what 600+ bhp feels like in a 944 ?

probably not quite as bad as the new 944 billet race engines soon available from 'Thor' with an output of 1500bhp...:)

I've haven't heard of it. Apart from maybe the crank would any of the 944 engine remain ?

Blimey, that looks like one for Patrick down under in Oz. His time attack car always impresses with it's power output but 1500????? [8D] and 120,000 Euros
