Non starter

Can anyone help. It worked one day then the next day would not start, checked everything, conclusion I could not hear the fuel pump start to prime the system when I turned the ignition key. I have checked the relay wiring as per Haynes manual and it is all ok. I put another relay in but still no click and yet there is voltage at terminals 15 and 31 which should close the relay but it doesn't. Now I am getting peeved as this one is beating me. Can anyone tell me the voltage at the relay board to close the relay and if there is anything else I should be looking for in the wiring like aux air valve and cold start. The car is a 1979 model 924 with 39,000 miles on clock. Ta.

When the engine is not running, the fuel pump will not run until the key is turned to the start position. I have always thought that this was a good idea, because if you are unfortunate enought have a crash and the engine stalls, the fuel pump will not pump out fuel unnecessarily. On the '79 model with the transistorised ignition, terminal 1 on the pump relay should 'ring out' to teminal 1 on the igntion coil. (IMHO) This detects the switching of the coil, and enables what I think is a blocking transistor in the relay. No sparks= no pump. Check that green wire out from the coil. Let the forum know how you get on, because this could be a useful FAQ for other members if this proves to be the solution.[sm=spanner5.gif]

Many thanks for that 924nutter. The words blocking transistor made the world of difference. I went back up to the the spark end as I knew there was nothing wrong with the relay. And low and behold I had no spark. I had checked this before and had a spark, so I changed the points, condensor, cap and rotor arm for good measure and the car started first turn of the key. So my advice is even if you think you have a spark check it properly as the relay is quite sensitive. Pity there is no mention of this in the Haynes manual as it would have saved me hours of wire tracing.
