Nitrogen in tyres - worth it or not

Has anyone tried this , and if so does it make a difference?

Reason I ask is that I was talking to a local tyre fitter and he said it made a noticeable difference to the handling as nitrogen doesn't heat up when driving plus the tyre pressure stays more constant as it doesn't leak round the rim.

They want £13.90 inc vat per wheel which includes cleaning the bead, new valve and re-balance.

You already have 79% nitrogen in your tyres. The wally at the garage was either gullible or more likely, trying to tap you up.

When the time comes for nitrogen to make a difference to you in any way, you wont be driving a 944!

If you need a rebalance anyway I say go for it but I wouldnt pay the above just for the nitrogen benifits, also once done you can only top up with normal air from your local garage so it kinda defeats the purpose....

I used to have a free source of "oxygen free air" and used to use it in my tyres, and I think it it makes no noticeable difference and I do lots of miles.

I can tell when one of my van tyres is less than 5psi down (on 60+)

Racing / track day experts may be able to keep a particular pressure more easily as the nitrogen has no water vapour in it and its that that expands more quickly...

If you just want it inflated on nitrogen its a quid per tyre at ATS.

And the huge benefits of having this done are...................??????

If you can purge tyres of 'normal' air and can top up with nitrogen then I'd say it is worth it for competition and track days where once the pressure is up to required it seems to stay more constant. Otherwise I wouldn't bother....

Exactly. I have seen those rigs but do you know anyone at our level using them? The funny thing is that in the club championship where drivers often struggle with the cups going off in the last few laps it may provide a small but significant edge. I haven't looked specifically for one of these rigs in our pits so I may be wrong and someone may have one but its the sort of thing that stands out like a sore thumb what with the big gas bottles.

Melv has hit the nail on the head. Even where the slight benefit might be worthwhile, youve still got all of the normail air in the tyre and fastfits arent going to be addressing this.

That is where a portable purging system comes in. Pro race teams always purge all the air out of tyres then refill dry prior to use, as I said though I have followed our club championship closely over the past 4 years and have yet to see anyone doing this.

Rig like this one:

Having said that though someone may have had such a rig in their truck and just kept things to themselves. Paragon (Mark Sumpter) for example had a portable laser alignment rig last year which looked pretty high end and uber flash for club racing.
