nickson motorsport 944 turbo track car build

hi my name is nick, xxxxxxxxxxx im currently building a 944 turbo track day car for myself.

the car in question is a 1986 220 turbo in metallic black. 180k on the clock, but full service history under the care of afn, la rose porsche and northway. the history with the car is one of the most comprehensive i have ever seen, with hundreds of pages of invoices and receipts for work carried out. the car has also had a full engine rebuild, head gasket, belts, and turbocharger within the last few years.

the car came with a few extras including an amd chipset increasing power to 270bhp and 310ft lb of torque.
mille miglia 17inch turbo twist style wheels and goodyear eagle f1 tyres
full black leather sports interior
boost enhancer
m030 front 968 cs calipers and m030 front hubs, braided brake lines on the front
brake ducts

all in all a great base car which i picked up at a good price as the owner suspected a head gasket failure, which turned out to be leaking radiator.

a few pics of the car before it came apart (in a bit of a dirty state) cleans up really well !

i then set to work stripping the interior ready for a nickson motorsport custom weld in cage, welded seat rails, interior seam welding etc.

SAM_1342-1.jpg

i also stripped the front end down, and removed all the inlet system to check the turbo and i intend to replace all the turbo vacum lines

i have also been stripping many smaller items from the car such as the sunroof trim, cruise control, air con, large washer bottle, and the sunroof mech will be removed and the panel bonded in place

i removed the dash and cut the whole bottom section off to save weight, only the dash top section survives and will house the clocks etc. i will fabricate a new centre console to house switches, pull chords guages etc

my current job is removing all the floorpan sound mat, and the huge amounts of interior seam sealer ready for seam welding the interior and adding seat rails and rollcage. this really is a horrid job and very time consuming. once the mat and sealer is removed i will then have to wire brush all the remnants away, and use thinners to get rid of all the glue and left overs from the mat. ready for paint once the cage is installed. pics to come

i have been prepping the rear bumper which i have removed the rubber trim from. just needs primer and then ready to paint.

in the meantime i have been collecting parts for the build

and some inspiration !!

im currently sourcing many other parts and have a few goodies on there way to me now so will have more updates in the near future. hopefully the build will progress at a reasonable rate as i would love to have this on track this year!

next step is finish the interior cleanup, and fabricate the cage and seat rails. i have 3 944 customer shells coming in for race prep within the next week or 2, so i will make 4 cage kits and 4 seat rail kits, along with harness points.

thanks for your time and interest, i will hopefully see you on track in the very near future. keep an eye out for updates to the thread.

xxxxxxxxxxx

Interesting. Youll want to keep the vinyl rears with the leather front seats, but Id suggest getting another rear seat squab and fitting it, because itll make a massive difference to cabin noise.

Simon

this is a track dedicated car that will be legal for the road, interior will be very bare with literally buckets and full weld in cage. im not bothered in the slightest about cabin noise. front seats sold as soon as they were advertised, i do still have the rears.

with regards to the wheels, they were an ebay bargain i stumbled across, very expensive wheels new, i paid pittance for them really. they are a very aggressive fitment though (et15), i will likely need to run overfenders similar to the ones fitted on the 944 race car in the last picture, as they sit around 50mm outside the arch all round. look awsome though! offered them up last week and once the car is set at ride height they will really set the car off!

Tinnitus beckons. [:D]

I think that I recognise the wings, or at least the car that theyre from. Was it a 937 replica that was used for Speed events? They wont fit the PU without a bit of fettling, though.

Strange ,even if ET15 they should still fit under the arches of a '86 unless it's an '87 .Are you sure it's an '86 ,the strut top mounts are from a '87+ ?

lol, im used to loud noise! i have owned some stupidly loud cars in the past, enjoy top fuel dragsters at full chat, and dj at clubs with silly sound systems! somehow i have managed to avoid damage to my ears so far.

the wings i bought off a chap called philip who used to run a 944 turbo race car, and now drives a 924 race car. your right they do not match the shape of the front bumper, but easily trimmed to suit. i will be modifying the bumper anyway as the splitter is just bolted on and i cant imagine it staying on the car for long when producing downforce at 100+mph.

on the logbook it states it was registered 14/11/86
the earlier cars ran et23 as std, so they would have fit fine on them, but this car runs the et50something as std, so the wheel is pushed out around 35mm on offset alone, without the added wheel width on top.

i offered the wheels up on the car and they sit miles out of the arches all round. there is a possibility once running at ride height and running some negative camber that they may just fit. but tbh, i quite like the widearch overfenders!

52.3mm. Built and registered in 1986 but its a 1987 model year car. Porsche started building 1987 cars in September 1986.

thanks 944man, that answers that question!

944scott im lovin the wheels aswell, couldnt believe i found such a perfect set for such an awsome price! they really suit the car well, and give the car an awsome aggressive stance without the need for any spacers, and the rears with dish look great! we shall soon find out once the ride height and geo are set if overfenders are needed or not, its going to be close for sure.

Hi Nick

Welcome to the forum, we have already chatted on Facebook...:) ..... Great project you have there , I love the car your using for inspiration. Just in case your not aware check out US companies Lindsey Racing and Speed Force Racing for more.... Err... Inspiration..:)

Pete

im excited about the build myself, i have not had the chance to build myself a car since starting the buisness 4 years ago, so im looking forward to being able to get on track myself rather than building cars for everyone else to drive.
for the minute the car is being built for trackdays, but there is a possibility it may be raced in the future.

Fibreglass wings look familiar. Does Steve B's car still exist???

Thats the car Steve. Didnt he work abroad? I half remember talk about building a whole new car, on 924.org, I think.

Simon

I think he was away in South Africa - my recollection is that this shell was being broken to provide donor bits for a new, improved car.

That picture looks like a fairly early incarnation - was a great car, no idea if his new one is done as I don't really frequent 924.org any more
