Newbie with 944

Rust in the sills, from the inside out along with the front and rear wings around the wheel archs' into car edge and also around the rear torsion tube mountings. Clutch wear as youre looking at close to £1,000 to replace it and worn cam drive sprockets found under the cam cover along with a worn slave drive chain and tensioner.

Very hard to summarize, your best bet it to reset the "show posts from" option to a longer period and read everything here over, say, a year. Most areas have been dealt with several times in the last year! Basically, pop out the vent in the door frame here:

Shine a torch inside the sill. It might be full of lovely waxoyl-type protection, more likely there will be a bit of surface corrosion. If you can see daylight be more concerned. You can get a camera-phone picture of the inside of the sills, try not to let go of the phone though! Also check the bottom edges of the front wings, and just in front of the rear wheels on the lower edges. Any corrosion elsewhere should only be very minor. Bodywork costs the same on a £3K 944 as a £30K 911, and proper restoration can cost far more than the car's purchase price. New sills, wing repairs, a few odd small repairs and a decent respray could easily cost £3-£5K. Obviously it's as easy to repair as any other car if you want a cheap job, but better to buy a good one to start with. Specific to the S2 (or the similar S), check the records for evidence of the belt change history and look for attention paid to the 16V timing chain. The cambelt is every 40K miles/4 years maximum, and the S2 should have a new timing chain and associated parts at one of these changes (most seem to be done by about 100K miles). A new water pump is nice to see every few belt changes as well. I had the cams inspected on mine; if the chain hasn't been replaced the sprokets can wear and that's not a cheap fix. On all 944s look for the clutch to have been changed at some point or it's close to a grand fitted. The suspension might well be tired out, and fuel and brake lines will either be recent of about to need replacing. S2s and Turbos suffer brake caliper corrosion, again look for them being overhauled or expect to need it soon. Head gaskets are getting prone to failure now, I guess just over twenty years is their lifespan. Anything else is as with any older car; expect some minor niggles and keep a decent amount back for first-year servicing. We used to suggest £1K, I'd up that to £1.5K myself as prices have gone up over the last few years. Don't expect perfection, but there are plenty of cars for sale so don't get suckered in by the first one you see. Do lots of research and ideally get to a meet to see owner's cars in the metal. The Rutland meet in February will have plenty of cars of all different conditions to look over.

welcome to the forum. the short version is that other than the obvious things you would look for on any new car you should check when the belts tensioner and waterpump was last replaced. its an expensive job if it needs doing after you have bought the car typically £900-£1000+ The second thing I would recommend you check carefully is the cills. There are plastic vents in both door jambs . If you remove them carefully with a screwdriver you can see down into the rear cill area with a good torch. Replacing rusty cills is also an expensive job and most 944S2 will have rusty cills if the work hasn't already been done. If you do a search on the forum or google you'll find a comprehensive check list somewhere good luck edit ....Ahh I see you got there before me Paul [;)][:D]

sorry was trying to work out how to put pics up. I said i would a while ago but havent had the time to do it.
 
Super present [:D] Back to your hatch. When I bought mine I got exhaust fumes in the cabin so checked out the rear hatch. Seal was in good order but the latch pins were shot so a new pair of latch pins were needed £25 of tinternet can't remember where. Then checked out the latch locks agree with the drainage tubes from the locks. Strip them down completely I bet they are full of crud if they are then they do not drain. Welcome to the club it's a great place to be. By the way the fastest colour standing still is WHITE.
 
Checked out the drainage tubes and found them under the carpet not connected so put them back on. Also the rear lights have been attacked with some sort of black sealant which is visible on the outside so they ll need doing again. Lots of backlash when changing gear and coming off the throttle and searches have suggested the rubber damper in the clutch may have broken up. Does this sound right? It sounds as if the torque tube is sliding forward and backwards and hitting something.

Things you should be aware of? 1. She won't fulfill your dreams. 2. She will break your heart. Oli.
 
Look into the clutch housing for black rubbery bits. There is an inspection hole on the passenger side of the housing, should have a plug in it - often missing -stick your finger in there and see what you find. If it is the clutch its a an expensive job, however it could be engine mounts, c/v joints or even diff!
 
There was no cover,it was missing. Stuck my finger in the hole but could nt feel anything,I need longer fingers. Is there any other way of checking this?

Is there a receipt for a new clutch in, say, the last ten years? Or ever? If not, I'd look to the rubber cushion breaking up as the most likely cause. The good news is that a new clutch will last you well over twenty years! [&:]
 
I think I recognise this car. Came from reading way out. It was on ebay at a dealers. 230k on the clock - the two front windows don't work properly. Has sunroof and aircon. First sold for £1160 - timewasting bidder then the dealer put it on for £1100 buy it now. It quickly sold and another dealer bought it in Hornchurch to make profit on. Last I saw, it was £20 under it's 2k reserve a few weeks ago. I know because i was watching ebay for a 2.7 944 to come up, but wanted a red one. I found oner shortly after.

mmm only 3cc engine [:D] Its a rather high mileage car at 2.3K would probably need a lot spending on it to bring it up to a really good standard.
