New Winter Boots

Just picked up a set of these 18” wheels for my 987.2S to replace my 19” Spyder wheels in the winter for road trips North and into various regions of Europe where they’re mandatory. The Michelin Alpin tyres on the rims look ok but are aged so will need replacing. Does anyone have any recommendations? The wheels looks to be in quite good cosmetic condition but I’m considering painting them a deep metallic gold / bronze as I reckon this’ll look good against Basalt Black metallic. Thoughts … stick with Porsche colour palette of silver or black or do something different?

Winter tyres are very difficult to get hold of in the UK! I was after Michelin Alpin but they were impossible to find so I went for these Pirelli Sotozero SII. The fronts are N rated and the rears are Mercedes approved. I bought them through oponeo.co.uk and the tyres were delivered within 10 working days from their warehouses in Poland and Spain. I’m going to have them fitted tomorrow. Hopefully all will be good for our Xmas trip to Yorkshire which, from experience, can throw up all sorts of weather from floods to snow!

They look amazing! I decided to keep everything original for the moment so I’m going with Cayman S II wheels in the OEM silver for my winter tyres. They’re in ok condition but I’m wondering if they’ll get a bit chafed by the winter weather. If they do I’ll get them refurbished and may go for gold then. 👍

The new winter boots are now on! I do prefer the appearance of the car with the 19" black Spyder wheels but, interestingly, the 18" Cayman S II wheels have tyres with a 40% sidewall height (vs 35% on the others) which makes a noticeable difference to ride quality by taking the hard edge off of it! I've done about 50 miles on the new Pirellis which are just staring to scrub off and bed in and I can feel that characteristic lateral stickiness in corners starting to show through. I'm looking forward to some winter driving now ...
