Hello

I am looking at buying a 944 Turbo that is currently for sale on eBay and Pistonheads.

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/944/porsche-944-turbo-60000-miles--alpine-white--exceptional-original-show-condition/864859

Any advice on this car would be appreciated.

Thanks

Looks very nice - although bear in mind this is a less desirable 220hp model, no LSD, no M030 brakes etc..
My money would be on an early (pre-abs) turbo on Fuchs or a later 250 model. I noticed there was also a 46k mile 1991 turbo up for sale on ph - no leather interior & nasty wheels.

The advert is completely over the top - i.e. "expensive air conditioning option" - I thought that was standard on the turbo?

The dealer has a somewhat suspect reputation - cleans up the cars well and takes nice photos though.

12 services in 24 years? You'd want to know a bit more about where the car has been sitting

Do a search on the dealer.
You are buying the car not the garage so doesn't necessarily mean anything but at least go in informed.

Well it certainly looks like a nice car but I've heard some mixed reviews on the seller, had no personal experience of them myself. However if your looking for a 944 Turbo to use and enjoy then I think you would do better on spending a little less on a well sorted example that you wont be afraid to use or put miles on. Low miles on these cars are a bit irrelevant as cars with more miles fair just as well and will probably have had some major work done. On a 60,000 miles I expect it will still be due a clutch, caliper refurb, chain and tensioner, and maybe due belts too, which will all come your way in first 1-2 years of ownership. Obviously if the seller can show this has already been done and you are happy with the low mileage catch 22 issue then it may be a good car to have for weekend hoons.

Thanks for the pointers.

It says it is a 250bhp model? How do I tell the difference between a 220 and 250 model car?

It has had 6 owners and a fully stamped service book and the previous owner bought it from www.4starclassics.com just over a year ago but traded it against a 911.

If it's a 1988 model and not a Turbo S, then it's a 220. And you can be sure that if it was a 250, the advert would be full of flowery prose about the wonders of the LSD, the hardened 1st & 2nd gears, the magnificent calipers etc.. [:D]. On the road, in standard trim, the 220 might be a nicer car to drive of course.

Edd - no cam chain / tensioner on an 8V

Good point about using the car - this looks too clean to be putting 10k a year on, but perfect for buffing [:D]

One other thing - no sports seats - you may not think this is an issue though

The link to previous dealings isn't good reading!!

As I live in Gretna (right on the Scotland/England Border on the M6) can you recommend any Independent Porsche Dealers who are reputable and are worth contacting?

Just spoken to Buchanan Motors and he says the car is a model 952 052

Does this make it a 220bhp version?

Reg is E812 AJC

Tom Ferguson Newcastle has a nice looking Turbo for sale. Guy I know up here is selling a nice 220bhp turbo with low miles. Nice car.

It'll be a 220bhp. I'm sure. Ask him to list the options.

As you wish....

It is a nice car. I'd prefer a 250bhp (my own preference and no disrespect intended to those guys who own 220bhp Turbos - some are amazing!) and this one in the link is also a nice car.

Your but the number on a the clock with this. Nothing more. Dont mine it's in any better condation, could very well be the opp.

250 modles have a lot more upgrades tend 2 be a higher spec. Mine has every factory upgrade you could spec. However 86 220 tend 2 have a stronger engine builded should u wish 2 upgrade past 350hp but that would as mine a turbo change.

250 has a larger turbo and can be upgraded 2 320hp.

If you don't buy this at 10k but you willing 2 pay that u should get a car that's need nothing over then next 20, 000 miles.

The white one does look nice but given the dealers reputation I guess you would have to approach it as a private sale - as a private sale it would probably be cheaper, but good cars are getting harder to find!
take a look/drive a few and see how you feel, at that price I dont suppose it well sell that quickly,
Tony

looks a nice one

It is a very good car I look after for the guy. Low miles, had a full glass out respray. Nice clean car that drives well. Well worth a look. Give me a ring on 07515 899 500 and I can give you more details about it if you want,
Alasdair

I've had no experience of Buchanan, you'd think no smoke without fire but equally I have only ever read people saying they've heard bad things rather than actually having experienced bad things!

That said, compare the two cars and the prices and I'd be going for the silver one, looks very nice!

If you mean the red Cat D 220 Turbo at Tom Ferguson's for £5k then I can assure you it looks nothing like the photo. It's been sat outside unloved for a year or two. Flat tyres, knackered sills, lacquer peeling and moss growing.
