New S2 owner saying Hi...

Hi everyone,

I've kinda been in the background for a while, reading, learning, some of you really know your stuff... Been wanting to buy a 944 for ages and finally found the one I wanted. Well if I liked 944's before, now I actually got one....well, its just awesome...so much car for such money...I cant stop looking at it/sitting in it, etc...

I'm impressed buy the interior on my 944, black vinyl everywhere seems pretty bullet proof and the logo seats are not really showing much wear.


Previous owner was a retired Doctor, had it serviced every 3000 miles and resprayed in 2005, its done 88,000 and polishes up really nicely, I think I'm going to realy enjoy this 944 ownership thing!

Your right about the S being wrong - I suspect the 2 is also as I doubt that there is room to move the S to the correct place with it there.

BTW if you check the "embed picture in post" box when you attach it will appear as a thumbnail. I have no idea why that isn't default, nor indeed why there is even an option to do it the other way. Edit: I see you figured it out for yourself!
 
That looks very nice, and with a working clock too!

I agree about the wheel too. Does it have a bonnet 'ornament' in the middle near the screen, or is it just a strange effect on the photo?

Edit: I see it does, looking at the side on photo.
 
Thanks...yes its an ornament, its a pointer...as in the dog...the previous owner added it as apparently he liked pointers, well I guess you'd have to to put one on the bonnett of you beloved Porsche...[:D]

I may remove it at some point, along with changing the steering wheel[:'(], but that would leave a hole that would mean a bonnet respray so its staying where it is for the moment. Its not really my thing but I wasnt going to turn down an otherwise good looking car bacause of it...[:D]

Hmm, I guess I agree that it isn't a reason not to buy the car, but it would have to be high on my list of things to address. Even a little rubber bung in the hole would be preferable IMO; most people wouldn't even notice it. I've actually often wondered as to the legality of those mascots. Clearly it would not be legal to supply a new car with one fitted because of the damage they could do to a pedestrian, but what's the situation with retrofitting them? Some of them look deadly to me.

I'd be tempted just to put a lozenge wheel back in - it's perfectly good as a wheel and fits in with the interior perfectly. There is nothing wrong with the ClubSport wheel, but personally I'd rather see a 100% standard car than one totally standard with a non-original steering wheel.
 
Yeah maybe I'll take a spanner to it tmro... I'm afraid its going to leave a bit of a mark on the bonnett too. Its quite legal though, wouldnt pass any European safety standards mind, didnt affect my insurance either which I find supprising.

I have the original lozenge wheel, seems in good nick too, not sure how easy/difficult it would be to fit though. This wheel for me isnt much better than the one on there, probably my least favourite part of the 944 is the old original steering wheel, a real throw back to the 1980's, I'm suprised porsche never updated it. Although not original, the ClubSport is much better looks wise. Cant justify the £250 for one at the moment though...

It looks a lovely car and I can only add that above the number plate is a threaded hole for the towing eye, this should have a black plastic cover which may be with the car if its been towed recently or if not is easily obtained off a scrappy.
 
Only a few quid from an OPC for the plastic tow eye cover.

I guess I like the lozenge wheel because it's so 80's - the whole car is after all. It's easy to change the wheel over if you have a 24mm socket and an extension long enough to get down inside the boss.

Or just 4 Pointer foot stumps would be preferable, get a saw on to it!
 
Oh dear me, yes, that bonnet ornament really would be removed within seconds if I had bought the car, but each to their own I suppose. Legality - not legal to have fitted at production for a UK car (unless it has a mechanism to allow it to fold back in the event of an accident - as merc does, or it retracts immediately below the bonnet level if it is disturbed - as RR does, which also stops the mascot being nicked.) Fitting as an aftermarket thing will be down to the pickiness of your friendly local MOT inspector; if he thinks it is dangerous, he should fail the car.

I have to disagree with Fen on the steering wheel; while the losenge wheel looks the part in the cabin, a more modern wheel is much nicer to use and improves the driving experience. I picked a good Momo item up from eBay for less than £20, and happened upon a mounting boss for a tenner as well. It's not quite as pretty as a CS wheel, but for my budget it suits me well. Given that you already have an aftermarket wheel, you could simply swap it for another (more subtle) aftermarket one very easily and cheaply - bolting it onto the existing boss would be a trivial job.

Other than that, it's a good looking car - hope you enjoy it!

Porsche offered a Momo wheel as an option: from memory I think that it was a Corse. I ronically they charged a premium for this, despite the then RRP for an original lozenge wheel being approximately £1,000 and the Momo wheel retailing for just under £100...
 
Nice car, and it's good to see another surface, so to speak. One has to question the intelligence of the previous owner: Here I have a Porsche 944S2 in nice, original condition and, it could be argued, is an appreciating classic. I know what I'll do! I'll get a tastless, tacky, "chrome" dog-type thing, drill a bloody great hole in the bonnet and screw it on! That would look nice! I won't use a removable adhesive pad, oh no! Maureen! Fetch the Black & Decker!

Yes I have to agree, but the previous owner was 94 and still driving towards the end, he died in March, I guess in his generation all cars had mascots, so it was quite usual for him. Its unusual to say the least. I will take it off and lay it to rest, hope it wont leave too much of a mark....there's a gasket which may have protected the paintwork a little...
