New owner and a question!

Hello all

I'm the new owner of a 2017 Porsche 911 GTS, my first Porsche and something of a 'dream' I guess for me.
I bought it from Dan @ Bonnevilles of Berkshire, who was a great guy to deal with.
It's Sapphire Blue with 23,000 miles on the clock with one previous owner (who didn't use it much for the past 2 years as it was one of a 'collection' of cars).

I'm delighted with it, but slightly nervous at the same time as Bonnevilles only provide a 3 month warranty - and I'm wondering if the general recommendation would be that it's worth the investment (and peace of mind) to get a 111 point check done and to buy an official Porsche Warranty.
I'll probably do 4-5,000 miles PA tops.

No issues so far (though I've done less than 250 miles at this point!) apart from I have noticed when reversing from my drive and turning the wheels to 'full lock' or near full lock, it feels like the front tyres judder or slip across the surface (not sure how to describe). I've been told that this is normal, including by my neighbour who used to be a service manager at a Porsche Service Centre, but it still feels unnatural to me so I thought I'd mention here (for further reassurance, or otherwise!).

I'm based in St Albans so will be part of the Chiltern region I believe.

Cheers!

Damian

Tyre skip is quite normal on these but will feel horrible for as long as you own it! Also occurs on 981's, but is slightly improved with Michelin PS4S tyres. Will feel worse in winter when the rubber is cold/harder.

Hi Damian,
Congratulations on your purchase - the 991 GTS is such a lovely car.
We have two 991.2's in the extended family and really enjoy them.

A couple of common items to fail on them are as follows.
1. Water pump. Pretty quick to fail in our experience. Both our cars had new water pumps changed (under 10k) because of small leaks. The issue was/is with the old housing not fitting properly. This has now been replaced with a revised part.
2. Turbos. Quite common for turbos to start failing. I know of at least two other owners in the club who have had new turbos fitted (under warranty) within the 20-30k mile range.

Have a look through your service history and see if the water pump has already been done (probably) within your mileage.
I would highly recommend the approved used warranty - remember you are dealing with a race car here. To replace a set of turbos would probably cost five times the cost of the warranty. With it you can sit back and relax as opposed to living in a constant state of worry!

Wheel skidding while slow turning absolutely normal as are the noisy tappets on cold start up.
Stock Pirelli tyres give a hard but assured ride - ill be changing mine to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S when the time comes.

Other than that, can't think of any other major problems.

Thanks for the comments!

Re: Water Pump - as it happens, that was picked up as faulty at a Porsche service (at Northway Porsche) Bonneville's had done before handing the car over - so it's literally just been replaced :)
Thanks for the advice - yes, I will look into the warranty - agree, it's nice to have peace of mind - I don't fancy having to replace the Turbo's.

Cheers,

Damian

I agree it feels unpleasant, but common amongst wide tyred cars. If you are interested search Ackerman effect.

Fantastic cars I have a 991.2 g t s 4. And you have
the same feeling when reversing, the same has happened on all my porsches nothing to worry about, just enjoy the car

Congratulations on the new car. I have a 991.2 GTS and love it.

i have tended to lean towards the peace of mind with the warranty…

Enjoy the new car 👍

Tim

Hope you are enjoying the GTS, think I may well live one road behind you.....there can't be that many blue 991.2 GTS's in St Albans (Chiswell Green). Thanks for brightening up my usual evening dog walk in the rain :)

Hi Everyone. I'm a new owner of a 991.2 Carrerra 4. I'm looking for a set of winter wheels and tyres. Sadly Porsche no longer supply these for vehicles not in production. Is anyone able to advise on the correct dimensions and offset for a C4 991.2? Many thanks! Michael.

Hi Damian,
Welcome to the Porsche club, hope you are enjoying your 991.
Tyre skip is normal, especially in the cold weather. It is called the Ackerman effect, google it .
Regarding warranty, i would highly recommend the Porsche warranty. I have had a cayman S and currently a 991.1 both with warranty .
My Cayman 718 had multiple issues all covered by warranty.
My current 991 has also had issues, all covered under warranty.

For me it’s a no brainier and total peace of mind, I can drive my 911 like I stole it.
It is probably the best warranty available, obviously it doesn’t cover wear and tear items brakes, tyres etc.

Remember a PDK failure is around £1500 to replace.

You can also extend the warranty until the car is 15 years old.

The only caveat is you have to service your car at OPC , however I regard that as a positive when you decide to sell.

Sorry PDK replacement should have been £15000

Check the Technical Data section in your owners manual. This should list all the standard and optional wheel and tyre sizes, including winter tyres.
