New member with a 1988 Lux

Haha... I agree, Jim...pure amateur...My second son (cossie man)would concur, he's always asking me for the keys so that he can show me how the car should be driven. However, he did drive it once before it's the latest round of mods (368bhp back then), he gave his friend a lift, a good friend who told me that he would never get in the car with my son again...I later found out that this had something to do with reaching 3 figure speeds on a 30 mph limit road?...I haven't let him drive it since..:)

PDK... if only I could find more details of the PDK unit that Porsche planned to launch the car with back in '86'...I know it was designed using experience gained on the 962 race car unit..

Personally, I'm not a fan of 4WD ... takes too much away from the driving experience IMHO

Pete has your rev limiter gone AWOL? (aiming for 180mph? :) )

Haha.. the rev limiter is set much higher than stock, over 7k but I can't remember the exact figure, a bonus of having stronger studs...I suspect 180mph is very achievable...you may recall when I missed that gear racing an S3 I recorded the data and entered it into 'gearcalc' with the 951's transmission figures...I can't recall the exact figures.. think it was 7134 revs at 92% throttle...IIRC gearcalc gave me a speed of 196mph... of course, there was no wind resistance involved but it does beg the question, just how fast would this car go if really pushed... I hasten to add this will never happen with me at the wheel, I want the car to outlive me with no more expense than regular servicing and general wear and tear....engine rebuilds are not on the list..:)

Hi Dan. Yeah the boost is quite high. I've spoken with Andy at Promax and Mike at Lindsay and they tell me it is no problem using super unleaded and their maps are fine for my boost levels. In 3rd it peaks at 19psi/4th 20psi and only in 5th it touches 21psi before dropping back a tad. This is due to the MBC.

I have a rebuilt engine and turbo. All stock with standard new HG. Also have a MAF kit. Standard overhauled injectors fuel it perfectly even at those levels. I have an uprated fuel pump, Bosch 044 equivalent. 3 bar FPR and a DPW. Exhaust is standard. Also have a wideband which shows low 11's at WOT in 5th so all good. Also I don't drive it at WOT all that often so it gets an easy enough life.

hi Stuart....if running that kind of boost I'd suggest using 98 oct or higher.. just to play safe... I believe that some super's are less, each octane is worth 2 PSI of increased boost with the same safety margins...

regards

Pete

Thanks Stuar!

sounds nicely tweaked ??

it gets me excited to run mine in. I still need a wide band and for now still run a standard airflow meter till I can afford to splash out on a maff ect. The rebuild eat up all my savings for this and some ????

Only use Shell V Power Pete which is 99 ron. I'll use a splash of BP or Esso premium if I'm caught short but only enough to get me to a Shell garage and strictly no WOT until I have the good stuff in again, so I should be good in terms of octane!

Cheers Dan, yes she goes well, not Pete standards but plenty enough to keep me grinning!

I cant wait for my grin to come back ??

it’s knocking on 3 and half years since I’ve had that wonderful grin! ??

Be all the better when it arrives Dan. Can only imagine your feelings. My gearbox saga was bad enough and had me down, but that was a slow puncture compared to your issues!

Anyway, you're on the home straight now, grinning just round the corner!

Thanks mate, and I long for that day, this weather has put a jolt to it in all truth , I just don’t feel like doing anything on it outside after work with this darkness and cold temps.

only need to get a new rad and fix the j boot and I’m going to fit a oil can catcher in between then should be good to get back on road and test/run in ??

at least im not the only one that feels that way, these cars have made me grin since my first at 17 and nothing’s changed only got better when I got a turbo version which I have now.

Looking forward to the summer and all being well with the engine ??

My 150(ish) horses feel rather inadequate after that lot ^ [;)]

The garage gave the car a pretty clean bill of health mechanically, just advised on a bit of oil misting around the filter and slight play in the front suspension.
I haven't noticed any leaks and it has never dripped any oil. They said it was the cleanest 944 they had seen for many years.
They took it out for a drive and reckoned it's not far off where it should be on the tuning front despite my initial concerns.
They do service Porsches so I guess they know what these cars should be like to drive.

They pointed out that the OS main beam wasn't working but it did work at the recent MoT. When I got home I changed the bulb and tested it before putting the headlamp back together - all good. As soon as I had finished I tested it again and no main beam! Could be a wiring fault I guess. I found the headlamp awkward to extract due to the adjuster motor bottom left fouling the screw hole tab so I only just managed to change the bulb with it half out. Is there a knack to getting it fully out? I will have another attempt at the weekend.

They advised that the centre exhaust is a bit rusty. The rear silencer is also corroded so I have ordered a full Dansk system, plus a throttle cam.
Got a pretty good deal on the Dansk thanks to Cyber Monday. I hope that this and the cam will improve the throttle response.

I want to keep the car pretty much standard in appearance. The only thing I don't like is the steering wheel.
It looks good but doesn't feel great to use. I have a Momo Cavallino that was on my Golf and prefer the thicker rim so I might see how it looks.

The OE Kenwood radio/cassette isn't great and struggles to find radio stations despite a brand new windscreen but I do have a Becker Grand Prix head unit and CD changer to fit once they have been serviced and tested. I will also upgrade the speakers at the same time as they are well past their best. Any recommendations?

That’s a beutifall example congrats mate??

I also have a lux 1986 and although my turbo is quite a beast compared , I can tell you one thing from experience, they have totally different feels to them, and really are completely diferent becuase if it.

i havnt drove my lux since I bought my turbo due to a life time of chucking money at it and 2 engine changes and last one had low oil preasure that I couldn’t figure out why ( now I’m experienced I know why)

point is is I truly can’t wait to get the lux going again as I miss the feel of it as it was more raw and revy and felt more involved that way. The turbo especially in my state and I’m sure a few other which have modified there’s feels great in a totally different manor.

Only way I can explain it is its very very smooth but savagely fast and you drive it totally different. I love both but really miss the lux becuase if the raw revy feel and I used to drive it fast round the bends ect becuase the power it had allowed that, but my turbo you dearnt dream of having your foot anywhere near the exellerator pedal unless you wish to wrap the car round something as the power is way way too fast so you only plant it when there’s no cars up ahead of time and on the straight.

I plan to get my lux back soon as it’s still at my dads in a garage I’ve been renting since the age of 17 ???? ( what a waste of money!) and I plan to do a lightweight rollcage type project on it with lightweight rebuilt engine components flywheel ect so its even pokier and revier, and that thought really excites me! ??

yours is a beuty mine wasnt loved so much wheN I bought it back in the day but I knew very little and got fed up with paying so called soeacialists which fixed one thing but ruined another in the process, now I know what I’m doing and have done machanics for a few years becuase of it , I can enjoy fixing and messing about with it in the future.

Yours i I would say is a peach and a rare find in that sort of condition so congrats and enjoy It ????

Yes your car is lovely, enjoy her! Can't advise on the stereo although my screen aerial seems to be decent if not great, there is an amplifier for it which must be plugged in, so worth checking that out, it needs power from the stereo, black wire I think but stereo wiring is notorious for being savaged.

Your headlight issue will most likely be the loom where it bends before the headlight, due to years of popping up and down. This was the case with my NS one. Fixed it and its been good ever since.

All the best

Can I ask what you paid for her ? Looks a lovely example ??

It was less than I got paid out for my MK2 Golf. [:)]

The Dansk stainless steel exhaust has arrived.
It looks good quality but no fittings were included - anyone here fitted one?
I just want to make sure that I have all I need to fit it.
