Hello,

I thought I'd best make a social "hello" post before I start popping up and asking idiotic questions. [:)]

My name's Glenn and I recently bought a '90 Red 944 S2 as a "weekend toy"; the daily driver remains a mildly fiddled with Mark IV Golf GT TDi, not that you're even vaguely interested in that!

The '44 is in decent-ish nick and has now had some niggles fixed (howling rear wheel-bearing, non-functioning aircon, single-speed heater blower and comedy hand-brake) as I am fortunate to have a friendly mechanic. It is currently away having its rather tatty driver's seat tidied up.

So why a 944? Oh well, I wanted "something for the weekend" that was "unusual", good looking and not too painful to live with; yes I'll use the horrid phrase "a practical classic". I don't suit a flat cap and beard so an MG wasn't an option. I also needed something that would accommodate my other passion which is sports photography, mainly motorsport and canoeing. The 944 has just about enough boot space to hold my camera gear, unlike so many other possible options.

So now the poor old thing is up for an arduous life trundling around various motorsport venues pretty much every weekend. A long term goal would be, if it proves reliable, to take it down to Madrid next summer for the canoeing European championships. Seems like that would be a more fun option than Sleazy Jet.

Anyway, that's about it for the moment. I'll try and get used to being social with other 944s on the road, someone flashed me on the A505 near Duxford a couple of weekends back but I was busy arguing with the odd woman that lives in my sat-nav at the time and didn't return the favour. If you're on here, sorry for not acknowledging you!

Hi Glenn and welcome to the best 944 forum.
We are a generally friendly bunch and can help with most things!
They are generally robust cars , fantastic for 20 ish years of age.
Drive and enjoy

Hi Glenn and welcome to our happy home. Glad you are enjoying the 944 experience even with a few niggles to sort out - but thats half the fun (honest !). As Mike says there is a huge well of knowledge here amongst the many contributors we have, so I am sure whatever questions you may have will soon receive helpful answers.

One thing I do just need to point out with my Mod hat on is that forum rules do not permit the use of a business/website name as a forum user name so I am afraid that will have to be changed. Our Register Secretary Paul McNulty is also a forum admin geezer here and will be happy to change it to a name of your choice (just drop him a mail or he may even pop up here soon).

Welcome again !

Ah.... right. Hadn't spotted that. I use it most other forums so it was an automatic choice. No worries about changing it to something else.

'tis a hobby that got away from me and now consumes far too much time. I'm rather hoping the 944 doesn't go the same way but I have a bad feeling about it... [;)] I currently have a backlog of several thousand photos to sort out, mostly of people in canoes.

I've PM'd Paul about the name change.

Welcome to the forum Glenn.

The '44 is a very practical choice, it's true. Huge boot space, even before you rip out the rear seats to save 20 kilos and fit a half cage "¦ and fast enough to get you to the racetrack without embarrassment!

Glenn,
Nowt wrong with GT TDI's i had a jazz blue one that had some nice subtle changes, lowered 30mm, 18" splits Rial Daytona, R32 rear spoiler ,Anniversary front bib.
Make sure the belts are in good order along with the slipper pad as these wear and are not a service item (Expensive wear or an expensive bang !)
Fill it up with good quality fuel and get yourself of to Madrid no problemo, they are pretty bombproof if looked after correctly and not abused....................Hello Welcome and Enjoy

Welcome to 944 ownership and the forum...... reckon you could probably get a canoe on top with a roof rack if you tried !

Mmm... Saving 20 kilos sounds useful but I hope I don't need a roll cage! I don't think I'm going to track-day the thing as I have few illusions about my talents as a driver.

My TDi (also Jazz Blue - there's a coincidence) has had all its changes on the inside (apart from a wheel change to 16"). Revo Technik remap, cat delete and some fiddling with the induction - now respectably quick in a straight line and still returns over 50mpg lol
If I can get the '44 to Madrid that would be a sweet run,I think.

Heh... I suppose I could at that, I know someone with a Boxster + rack who gets his kayak on top.

A good taste in cars:) I had a mapped td gti 211hp and as clarkson would say, about a million torques.

Didn't have great luck with it needing two sumps from hitting the ground and cracking them on country roads, but never seen another diesel that accelerated like that and could still average 50mpg on a run. 61mpg whilst mapped was the highest I ever got on a mainly motorway trip watching the mpg all the time (good money saving game).

So long as your S2 hasn't been unduly messed with by ammature mechanics like the one my friend was unlucky enough to buy it'll be as sturdy as a rock and it'll soon get its hooks into your heart. All it needs is a nice long a-road drive and you'll be smiling from ear to ear before you know it.

The heater speeds as I learnt here recently just needs you to replace a little board with four resisters on it that sits in the recess in front of the windscreen. Easy fix :)

I wouldn't recommend doing the wheel bearing yourself as my last one was so solid to remove that it broke the removal machine at my local friendly garage!

Welcome Glenn and congrats on the choice of car [:)]

The S2 should see you there and back to Madrid with no problems if everything is in top order and maintained well. We have done several European trips in ours with no issue.

Make sure the camchain and tensioner slipper have been changed within the last 50k miles and the belts within the last 3 years and you'll be well set for reliable motoring.
