Hello all,

I've just bought my first Porsche (yesterday) a beaufifull '06 Cayman S in silver .. wow! what a fantastic car, I've never driven anything quite like it.

Being a newb there's a few things I'm unsure of.

Firstly the car sadly only has one key. What are my options here? Can I get a secondhand one from ebay & have it recut/programed or do I need to go through a main dealer + any idea of cost?

My car has the phone PCM option but how does this work? Can I connect my phone to it via bluetooth like my last car or is it a stand alone phone? I see it has a slot for a sim.

Lastly what are the model designations? People talk about 981,986 & 987's . could someone explain them please.

On the Cayman you can buy a (working) used remote key head, and have the alarm system re-programmed to recognise it. This can be done by Porsche Centres, and good independents who will have the right equipment. Best bet is to call a PC for a quote, but an independent will likely charge about £30-35 for reprogramming. You will need to give them a copy of your V5C so they can get the programming codes for your car. Of course, you will need a new key blade, but you can get them on t'internet fairly easily these days. PCM doesn't have Bluetooth, although there are aftermarket kits which can add it. Google Viseeo, Tooki, Mobridge, or Dension. Porsche give all their models a number designation. 986 was the original Boxster, 987 the later model, and the latest is 981. There were two generations of the 987, which you will see referred to as Gen 1 and Gen2. For the Cayman, they put a C after the number. Yours is a 987C Gen 1. Hope this helps.
 
A second hand fob will also need a new (Virgin) transponder fitted to it. The car will not start if the transponder isn't also programmed. There are 2 systems in the key..... The remote RF fob which enables/disables the alarm and central locking etc, and then the transponder which needs to be recognized by the immobiliser before the car will start
 
I think you can re-use a transponder on another 9x7. When you go through the key learning process on PIWIS it reads the transponer and radio remote from the key head. On the old 9x6 alarm unit it used to write a security code back to the transponder itself, preventing it being re-used, but I don't think this is the case with the 9x7.

Both types of transponder, (Philips Hitag and Megamos crypto) write both ways and are locked and passworded once programmed to a car.
 
Thanks for all your replies, found a key on ebay so I'll give my local indy a call tomorrow & see if the have the kit to do it.
 
Given what Kevin says about the transponder pill, you will have to get a new one of those too. They don't seem to be listed separately from Porsche. Maybe Kevin has a source he can recommend?
