New guy, New 944 S2!!

Evening all, just joined the forum as I have recently purchased a J plate Guards Red S2. Loving the car, always wanted the S2. It is a rolling project so will be doing a few miles in it and refurbishing bits and pieces. 160K miles and one owner from 92-2007. Needs some tlc although body very good. Will be calling in to read posts and pick up advice.

Welcome, whatever you need to know someone will have the answer on here for you, also any bits needed can usually be sourced here, enjoy your car and when you lust after more power the lads with boost available will be able to guide you [:D]

Thanks for all the comments guys, now we have some sun I'll take some shots and load them up.
First question and I think I know the answer. i popped a few of the cam belt cover bolts tonight to see what condition the belts are in as I have no recent history.
The belts look in good condition, however the toothed belt nearest the rad is very very slack with inches of lateral movement. I am guessing this is not good and the belts need sorting asap? The car drives very well and I am using it daily (well was up until my foray into the cam cover) [:(] .

The balance belt is supposed to be pretty slack - best to get it checked by a specialist to give you peace of mind.

More important is to whip off the cam cover and check the camshaft chain, tensioner & sprockets - a simple job for a porsche garage
 
I would change the belts regardless of condition if you don't know the history. The balance belt (closer to the radiator) is a lot slacker than you would expect, if you're used to looking at cam belts. Be sure to check the condition of the pads on the chain tensioner (underneath the camshaft cover, 20 minute job to take off if you wiggle it under the fuel lines). Mine were a few minutes away from total failure when I bought the car. They are plastic and if they break the chain can catch and snap, destroying the head.
 
Thanks guys, how easy is it for an ex Army mechanic who just tinkers now? Any special tools needed and should the water pump be done at the same time?

Hey you are local to me (for now, house hunting further afield!)

The chaps in here seem really friendly, I am relatively new around here myself, but this forum has been a massive help in my education and hunt for a couple of cars I am in the process of finding and buying.

Although, there seems to be an interesting rivalry between those with their turbo's versus those with many more cubes.. I am just buying a 968, so will be siding with the cubes camp.

From what I have read, I would probably say get the waterpump and belts done by a specialist. All the buyers guides always say "make sure there is a receipt for..." and waterpumps and belts being done always follow that comment..
