New CaymanS owner nearley or confused

Depends what you are looking for from your car. Every time I've back-to-back tried a Cayman or Boxster against a 911, I've preferred the mid-engined one.

wonder if this could be a ploy for me to part with more monthly cash, doubt it, as itll be registered when they get it. Love the wollop in the back, and it handles so sweet, but , and it it is from memory, the Cayman was very capable, also with a better noise-god damn it-----so confused now!

In a pickle now....

Ordered my new Cayman S in white, with PDK, Chrono +, PASM, Sports Seats, exhaust tips, heated seats, xenons and will be delivered in a couple of weeks. So excited about my first Porsche, loved the demo i was supposed to be having from now until delivery of the new one.

Problem is, i went to pick up the the demo Cayman S which i thought i was having until delivery of the new one and then i have been given a 911 Carerra 4S fully loaded. Wow its such a good car!

I really hope i wont be disappointed now, when i get my new one now, any other people that have had experience with the both cars could they please shed some light on the differences between the two.

Hope this makes you feel better about your choice of Porsche ... I was once lent a 911 press car with all the toys and then some for 5 days whilst my then Boxster was having a new roof fitted under warranty .... When I went to pick up the Boxster I told the Porsche guy I think I will be upgrading back to a 911 after my week / 500 miles worth of driving pleasure .... 10 minutes and several miles later I had to call him to say forget what I just said ...there is nothing to compare to the sensitivity of a perfect chassis / mid engine sports car and the feel of the shared components like the steering, gearbox,clutch, brakes, suspension are so much more on the button in the Boxster I was so glad to be back in the best value Porsche ever and without doubt best mid engine car in the world at this money level .... fantastic [8D] Should add wallop in the 911 is something else but in the real world anything with over 200bhp is going to be more than adeqate on our crowded pot holed excuses for roads![]

having had both i would agree that they are different but also equally excellent!! the midengine handling of the cayman is very sweet the raw thump in the back from the 911 is addictive you will have a big grin in either[]

Wow,that must be a first, for an OPC to lend you a demonstrator for the period between order and delivery. Who is the dealer and what delivery period have they given you ?

Thanks for the replies, yh im sure ill be happy with the cayman as it made me grin when i test drove it. Just dont want to be let down by any lack of grunt that i now cant really remember from the cayman. The dealer is Solihull Porsche, thoroughly nice chaps! I have about 2 weeks to wait, car is built and ready for delivery. Paul

Maybe you miss an important point. Is a 911 4S full loaded worth 2 Caymans? Whenever I buy a car (sadly much too often), I always am influenced with just how much I have paid. I have had 2 Caymans and more than 2 modern 911s. The Cayman is a much better all round car, more practical, depreciates less, is more economical and handles better than a 911. If you have the money for a fully loaded new 911, buy a 2.9 Cayman AND a 2.9 Boxster! []. If you have'nt, then be very happy with your Cayman. It really is a great car

Go on the PCGB Factory Tour to Leipzig. Have a blatt round their FIA track in several different models of 911s and Caymans. Even the GT3 owners came back saying "wow, those Caymans handle/go really well!" or something similar. So worry not, Derek is right.

Hi Paul, I posted this a few weeks ago on the forum "Boxster S I've had 2 excellent fun cars and the option of dropping the hood (nothing better on a hot barmy night or wrapped up on a spring morning), shoot me down but I enjoyed the 986 S more than 987 S slightly softer ride but great for tail out slides. 997 S and Turbo the best for crossing big distances fast and the Turbo add int the wet and slippery to that. Cayman S brings back the smiles and loses the roof rattles on our poor road surfaces biggest fault no 944 stlye sunroof option but then you wouldn't need the Boxster. I've recently switched from a Turbo Tip to a Cayman S with PDK yes its moved me out of a super car back to a sports car I had tremedous fun in the turbo and seeing a line of 997 Porsche snaking through the peak district is a sight to behold and hear with a few wearing the sports exhaust systems. But on my Lincs roads it possibly not the best Porsche to be in, hence a change due to it spending too much time tucked up in the garage and after an opportunity to go banzai around Tuddenham airfield last year in a Cayman S with PDK which had me doubting the tail heavy 911 concept I'm now giving a new Cayman S its chance to get under my skin and impress. Early days yet but leaving aside the mental top speed and lightning acceleration experienced in the turbo the mid engine weight distribution adding to chuck ability together with really light precise steering is not leaving me wanting at the moment." As an addendum now having a few more miles under my belt in the Cayman S, I can add the only time I have missed my 997 Turbo was when over taking several slow moving cars and a truck, midway along the line of cars I thought to myself I'd be clear of them all now in the turbo, but a few moments later I cleared the truck in the Cayman S well before any cars or a bend appeared ahead. Later in the day I followed a fellow member's turbo across country ,away from the junctions the turbo was quicker but after quickly catching up I could carry more speed into the twisty bits until he put his twin turbos to good effect powering out of the next corner. I'm also really enjoying the steering feedback that is slighly numbed in the 4 wheel drive 911 cars (now in a rain storm I'd probably want to be back in a Turbo). Biggest bonus is the pdk now that I'm starting to understand the multiple options, it is so good when planting you right foot in sport mode and the gear shift hanging on to get the maximum acceleration before seamlessly swopping up a cog and it all happening again until sixth by which time you should really be on a track or airfield. Now you can do the same in a pdk equipped 997 but as the engine and gear swopping is all happening directly behind you in a Cayman, the noise just brings out the biggest grin. I'm starting to look at my 997 ownership years as providing a fantastic mature sports car driving experience, being In the Cayman S I've gone backwards in time to a less mature possibly more fun period of my driving life somewhere between sporty clio and 944 up to Boxster S. Enjoy your Cayman S once settled in you'll wonder why you had the 997 doubt but after you've had fun and many smiles but fancy getting back to responsible Porsche ownership they'll always be a 911 shape to take its place who knows a mid engined one at that, some time in the future. nicely put paul i have to say that i`plan to hang on to the 993 when i get the cayman s pdk-planned in a yr or so- as i think that will tick most of the boxes.....but then again the hit in the back of a 997TT would be wanting....decisions.....[]

Hi Everyone; I own a 2009 Cayman S PDK, which is a great car but since a young child always wanted a 911. When my Cayman S went in for some new tyres the OPC gave me a 2010 911 CS2 PDK, I though wow this is it, but after 6 hours and 120 miles I wanted the Cayman back. The 911 is a fantastic car but just did not feel as “balanced” as the Cayman when pressed the front end felt vague and no quicker. The interior of both cars is almost identical although the 911 did fell roomier. I feel disappointed about the 911 but pleased with the Cayman. Regards Jon

I had a pdk Cayman S when my C4S went in to have its sports exhaust fitted. I was hugely impressed with it. For me, the back seats in the 997 are the deciding factor as I have two girls aged 6 and 8 who fit comfortably in the back but if it wasn't for that, I'd take the Cayman. For a current 997 purchase I'd be more tempted by the GTS than the C4S - it looks like very good value comparatively speaking at least. Andrew
