new carpet advice needed

has anyone had their car completly re-carpeted with new carpet ? Either using a specialist car interior company or diy using off the roll carpet and their existing carpets as templates ?
I'd appreciate any tips advice and links etc

Right have a look at www.coverdaleuk.com

Back in August they quoted me £288 for their Bleinham Range £347 for their Wessex Wool Range and £450 for their Kensington Luxury Wool Range.

That quote was valid for three months so it may have increased slightly in price now, they seemed like helpful people who sent through samples with the quote, the only reason I did not use them is becuase I found a set of original carpets in good condition for slae in the colour I was after.

nice one thanks Scott.

Mm looks like a good professional set up. The only problem I can see is all of the carpeting included in that price ? ie tunnel cills and rear hatch area etc etc or is it just a set of 4x mats ?

thanks ..do they use their own templates for all 11 pieces or do they need your old carpets ?

I'll give them a ring in the morning .

I believe they have a template, I have some of the old quote and order form here still and it does not say anything about them needing it.

What colour are you after ?

Are the carpets flat? I thought they were moulded to shape, and hence flat 'off the roll' stuff would never fit as well as the original stuff.

I'd be interested to see the results of a re-carpet in this manner. (I presume the existing carpets are beyond a really good scrub and pressure-wash outside the car?)

looking for a light beige to go with linen /leather seats . I know its gonna get dirty quick but it looks amazing when clean.

Ahh pretty much like mine then, are the tops of your dash dark blue or black? As mine are blue I put a set of cobalt coloured carpets in as its a good contrast.

I think they are Oli. i bought a steam cleaner but when I looked at the carpets they have clearly been out once already before I bought it.
A completly new set of carpets would make the interior look like a new car and its either that or I buy another car .
I've been hankering after either a jaguar or a Mercedes SL500 [;)]

very nice contrast. i did look at some of the blue carpets in the link but I think I prefer the all beige interior .My plastic bits and dash are a blue colour .
Those speaker pods are amazing ! i would knock them off with my big feet every time I got in or out [:D]

thanks Edd I'll contact them monday. I'm all fired up about this now. Replacing the carpets is a relatively cheap way of rejuvenating the car and making a tremendous difference.
Thanks everyone I'll let you know how it goes

Nick,

Make sure you arrange a second mortgage and take out a few new credit cards before you make that call to Southbound on Monday. Edd's right - they do top notch work for Porsches of all types, but know how to charge for it. When I was looking at getting a bolster re-covered on some sports seats Southbound proposed to charge me double (yes, exactly double) the next-cheapest quote. A nice Merc or Jag may just work out cheaper than some new 944 carpets ...

I suspect that they cater for the bulk of the Porsche market; namely the better-off types, not 944 owners!

thanks for the warning Oli . Sometimes some suggestions seem like money is no object to some owners [:D]

Prices have to be realistic don't they. No point in paying £1000+ for carpets in a car worth £2k and needing £3k work done on it .

With you all the way on that one Nick.

Snag is that if they charge £1000 for carpets then £1000 is what carpets cost ... regardless of whether they are for an ultra-rare and very expensive classic 911 or whether they are for a very low-value 924. 944's aren't worth a load of money - even the best, most desirable S2's - and hence things like good carpets will always represent a much larger proportion of the value of the car.

Which is, I guess, the reason why a lot of 944's are being scrapped; the cost of restoring them (or even just looking after them) is too great compared to the value of the car.

(I'll add that Southbound stuff is very, very nice. You won't find better, anywhere. It's just that you will have to pay for it. Are you sure that your existing carpets wouldn't respond well to a really good scrub and jetwash? That would - after all - be free. However I can guess you'd possibly run into problems with working on your own car and not having enough space again.)

Once I'd seen gorgeous new carpets in a classic Merc SL500 I have been set on putting some in mine.
What I may do is remove my carpets and use them as templates.
Cut out some new carpet and send it away for someone to back with rubber and bind the edges. Then I'll fit them myself .

I don't know if this is possible to be honest. I've just finished fitting a new carpet in one of our bedrooms yesterday and too late I remembered that I'd previously swore I'd never attempt to fit a new carpet myself again grrrrrr.

Southbound don't do carpet sets for the 944 because they are molded unlike the 911's. The molded sets are only available from Porsche. I have been looking for a new carpet option for my car for ages and have yet to find anything. I managed to find a good used black set which I have in the loft for when I can be bothered to change mine out but would still rather replace with new. Interested to see if you find any other options other than the el cheapo kits from the US which are not supposed to be very good quality.

it may not be possible to make all the carpets myself but even if I replace the scruffy ones like the door cards, rear hatch area and cills and outer footwells it will make a big improvement.

Taking the seats out will allow me to really get some oil and grease into the sills too hopefully.
