New Boots for the Cayman S

Probably been covered before..but here a little more in detail....

It would appear that the Cayman S has slightly different tyre sizes to open top version..or is it me?
Mine are 235/40 x 18" fronts and 265/40 x 18" rears. But is this because I have PASM suspension rather than normal springs (PASM cars sit 10mm lower)

So because of these 'odd' sizes...prices seem higher than those for a boxster.

However, I have been able to get quoted for the 4 tyres £715.76 all in...

Comments anyone?
 
Looks like the same size as a 987 Boxster to me...? As per MArks comments, those are standard sizes for 987 Boxster with 18" wheels. A lot of on line listings still bring up the old 986 series cars sizes which were 225/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear. Costco were doing a deal for 4 Michelins recently - maybe worth a try if you have access to a card.
 
You surprise me!!...with all the phoning around to various outlets including Design 911...they all wanted me to double check the fitment size on my car, as apparently the 987 comes with 225/40 front and 265/35 rear (18")...most thought it strange that front and rear both were 40%, where they expected either one to be a 35%. I put it down to that I've got pasm... Price quoted are for Continentals!
 
Alan, Unless you already have Contis and are happy - DON'T DO IT ! [:eek:] The sizes I quoted are in both the 987 Owners Handbook (although the only one I have is a USA version) and the UK Product Brochure. The 986 has the 225/40 front and 265/35 rear (on 18" wheels). It is odd for the sizes to change like this - as you know Porsche are normally very consistent on wheel/tyre sizes...
 
The listing I have for Cayman 3.4S is:- 235/40ZR18 & 265/40ZR18 on 8" and 9" wide rims respectively. Also, I understand, new tyres have been developed for the Gen2 Cayman S which allow improved ride quality through reduced standard tyre pressure without compromising grip. Could it be that you are being quoted for these new high tech tyres? The greater rigidity of the Cayman over the Boxster means Porsche approach the suspension set ups differently on the two cars so they aren't directly comparable. Sorry Mark, the Cayman is so much more than a Boxster with a roof. [;)]
 
Yes, it' sa little more expensive too...[:D][;)] Seriously John, read Richards comments (linked above) and the others people have posted. I appreciate the Cayman is a bit stiffer, but Conti's don't come off well on either Boxsters or Caymans. They do seem to work well on 996 and 944 though. I couldn't believe the difference on my car. The Contis were a complete waste of 20000 miles.

2½ times stiffer is somewhat more than a bit. [;)] It is also lighter, more powerful and has a better drag coefficient. [8D]
 
Just put a new set of Conti Sport 3 on the 987 £500 and to be honest feel OK had the Conti Sport 2 on then before came with them from new..please note they are 17" I think it is all down to personnel choice Porsche would not recommend a bad tyre
 
Brian, Do you notice any difference between the older version 2 and the newer version 3? I still have the version 2 Contis and like them a lot, my only complaint is that they have quite a harsh ride. If the newer 3's ride a bit better, I'll go for those next time.
 
To be honest I can not tell any difference the last 3 Porsche's I have had have all had Conti;s fitted so I have nothing to compare them with ,as you know I am captain slow so it will not make a bit off difference to me The tread pattern look's the same go onto Continentals web site and look at the pics.
 
As a 'soft' Boxster S 987 owner I can confirm that the tyre sizes are EXACTLY the same as the Cayman S, 235/40/18's front, 265/40/18's rear. And if the Cayman wasn't 'significantly' stiffer, and dynamically better than the Box, what would've been the point in developing it from the Boxster (and charging an extra £4k in the process)? Hmmm

Hi John, If you find the Contis harsh, then don't ever fit Bridgestones! My previous Cayman S came with Contis and I switched for Bridgestones, which gave sharper handling, but the nosie/harshness definitely went up. Of course this was with 18inch alloys. Best wishes, Richard.
 
Although I can't comment personally on which is best, my CS is still on the original Michelins, my work collegue had his CS changed from Bridgestones to Michelin and couldn't believe the difference in grip and is pleased with the change. I know I'll need a change of rears soon, well once I get the car out and I'll be sticking to Michelin.

I recently changed a Boxters S on 18'' wheels shod with Michelins for a Cayman S on 19'' wheels shod with brand new Bridgestones. I definitely am experiencing a harder ride and increased noise levels. The former I attribute to the 19'' over the 18'', neither car being fitted with PASM. I was wondering if the increased noise levels were down to the tyres. Are Michelins known to be a quieter tyre? Regards Peter

I have found over the last few days that the Michelin Sport Pilots are complete cr4p in snow. I got stuck in our office car park last night and needed to be pushed out - such shame!
 
mine has been cr4p in snow on both types...no more so on michelins,,but the michelins definately quieter (IMO)
 
Michelins and snow chains...Mmmmm now there's an idea[:)] Michelins for me!.....due to be fitted on saturday with nitrogen
