New 944 owner Project underway

Hello,

Thought I would share my new toy with you all. My name is Chris, I own and engineering company and manufactures car parts.

We can make pretty much anything from billet material, alloys stainless titanium etc.

We have spent the last 5 years making mainly subaru, nissan and ford parts.

Just last week I thought about starting a new project with something different so I found myself a 1988 porsche 944.

The car is in very good condition already. The front wings and sills need changing and a few other minor issues but apart from that its not too bad.

The plan is too keep the car but I want to get it very nice , so the idea is pretty much to strip it down and see what we can make, [:D]

I only brought the car a couple of days and the engine is due out tomorrow ... but in my mind this is what I shall be making

Front pulleys - to lightweight alloy ones
Timing pulley, to make it adjustable
New uprated fuel rail.
engine mounts,
Maybe a new porshe engine cover
alternator bracket ..
Header tank

New suspension links.
New suspension bushes from polyurthene

Might look at doing some brake calipers , or maybe adapting some bigger porshe ones,

Lightweight hubs
New alloys - of course

And a few photos of the car and some parts we have made in the past

Hello and welcome. That looks like a nice Lux you have there - well found.

Why are you planning on making these new parts? I can understand that you will do so because you can do so, but what is there to be gained from doing so? Part of the reason I ask is that Porsche made a fairly good job of making these cars when new, and hence a number of the improvements that may apply to other cars aren't so applicable here - 'cos they were done well in the first place.

Best of luck with the project, and those are handsome-looking pieces of engineering you have pictured.

Hi Chris,

Probably in danger here of breaking every non-advertising rule this forum has, but welcome. [:)]

Interested by the pics there of the front wings off. I've often wondered about repairing the wing corrosion without taking the wing off, as I've seen occasional corrosion to the a-pillars. Have you got any close-ups of the condition of the car with the wings off?

I've just bought my second set of door hinges this year. I reckon at £79 a pair they must be in with a shout of being the most expensive "non-item" on a 944!

If you get a minute please run off a batch for those on the Forum still complaining of a door drop!

hi guys,

Yes sorry about the photos.... Its wasn't my plan to stick photos on here with my business cards but they are all i have...
If you can pm me some advertizing fees i am more than happy to pay them as i am sure i will be here for a while

i am planning to upgrade the parts ,not just because i can ..... But it make it my own. The parts i make will improve the car in many ways. Handling, braking and performance.... there is no point me spending money on other parts when i can do it myself

will post some more pics tomorrow

alright Chris, this is Jamo from Scoobynet I thought I hadnt seen you posting on SN for a whilst.

I will watch with interest what you start turning out, I speak from experience when I say chris is very good at what he does! :)

If you do make any parts and they're good then make sure that you do a few more us forumites!

Hello Chris. Its funny, but when you started making these for Imprezas I though: shame that you cant do some for my 944...

:D

It's full of scoobynet members! lol Yes haven't been on there for a while as our dealers are doing all out advertizing for us now ... still making new parts for them thoug

We made a start on removing the engine today.... should be out in the morning then I can take a good look at it. Can't wait to get cracking with this

Most likely be keeping them all standard, I only really do underdrive pulleys on request- too much hassle when people complain there battery isn't charging enough.
May look at converting the power steering to the modern multi rib belt though

Oli.

The effect is similar to that gained by lightening the flywheel. The lower the reciprocating mass the quicker the engine picks up.

The 944 engine uses cheap stamped pulleys, just like every other mass produced engine does; and l;arge gains are there for the taking. An under-driven pulley would be better still, as it will sap less power.

Not much of an update , but engine is out and I have started taking parts off .

Will do some more tomorrow night if she lets me, I have to be in bed by ten [8|]

Think we will be doing all the pulleys, will be changing the power steering to the mulit rib type belt... that will be nice

The alternator bracket I removed has to be done , may do the cam pulley casing aswell..... it's just when to stop [:(]

Hi,

Started drawing some of the parts up tonight...

Drawing show front and back of the pulley ... and coverted to a multi rib. I can make them as one piece rather than two but it would mean taking the timing belt off too take the crank pulley off

Have you thought about making a power steering pulley which has threaded holes to allow the mounting of a 36-1 trigger wheel? Would make after market ECU's easier to fit.

something like this?
