Nearest modern 944 alternative ?

Completely ignoring the desire for a convertible, the Cayman strikes me as the closest thing to a modern equivalent of the 944 (also ignoring the lack of rear seats, engine position....but I think you get the idea).

Cheers

Something old and british MGB, spitfire, Tr 4,5 or 6 then you will think the porsche was fine and get it back.

Another 944, then you can rotate them!

TVR chimaera

seven clone

merc sl or slk (my brothers selling a nice one in black, manual, supercharged low owners £4,250 - wife is pregnant)

try pistonheads classifieds search you can filter in things like convertable / petrol diesel / rwd etc.

Old and British, trying to go less needy than a 944, this needs to live outside, I doo like MGB's but they do crumble and arent very fast.

Arent the SLK's all auto and are blessed with an engine that sounds like a Hoover sucking up ball bearings as I heard it once described.

Chim, yes, love them but my budget is bottom end really for a decent one, plus, not exactly a paragon of reliability.

Did consider a seven type thing but perhaps a little too compromised, went in a neighbours, impressive but his was so full on my ears were ringing for a week, they arent all hardcore ones though, tend to be a lot of money but also keep their money quite well.

RX8- Nooo, everyone I know who has had one has had expensiveness and general agro, nice car though, handling is legendary, never had the pleasure though.

His (well his wifes really) SLK is definitely manual, they are relatively rare though in manual form. I think the journos slagged the action off a bit at launch but I drove it and it felt fine to me. I cant even remember what year it is but rust free and everything works as it should. Exhaust/engine is pretty quiet with a hint of supercharger, more sewing machine than hoover!

My daily driver is a Mercedes SL320, 1997, with the straight 6 engine. 0-60mph 8.2secs, 22mpg round the town. Really smooth, superbly built, beautiful interior, corners remarkabley flat for such a smooth riding car. Effortless in town, as its auto box is smooth and quick to kickdown. You'll get a great one for £7k private. Go for late model straight six.

I have driven a 350ZX coupe. Its got a torquey engine, hard ride, direct steering, terrible qulaity trim for the price, continuously intrusive exhaust note, poor rear seating space, a large crossmember across the boot (Nissan always cock up the body engineering and have to fit some bodge after launch - I worked for them for 16 yrs), stops really well.

RX8's use as much oil as fuel, and forget to check it weekly at your own peril, the guy who designed the Toyota GT 86 worked in Germany when the 944 were current models and actually has based his design on that.
He was very impressed by them.

So Boxster S it is then.... [:D]

Z3 would be a very good choice, we have one here (2.8) and it does not suffer scuttle shake although it does have a front strut brace and poly bushed up front.

The other big plus side for the Zed is that all the body panels bolt on so swapping out rusty panels is a diy job.

Buy a Golf GTi , quick, well built, carry kids and wives and dogs and shopping and ......

I've had about a dozen from MK1 through to MK6, they are the perfect car to compliment a classic.

I would look at the S2000.
I have not driven one but it's the only car suggested so far that triggers any kind of remote interest/relevance from me.
The Audi TT is ugly, impractical, FWD, has an appalling steering feel, no boot space and feels claustrophobic inside.

Or maybe try a proper modern GTI such as a Clio RS or Mégane RS, which should be easier to deal with on a daily basis that a RWD cab. That's what I would do, as I can't see any serious modern equivalent to a 944.

Nissan 200sx S15, 2.0 litre turbo charged, over 200bhp, front engine rear wheel drive 6 speed gearbox, four seats proper boot, 0-60 in just over 6 seconds in standard form. Beautifully balanced ( extensively used for drifting) and finally extremely reliable. Made from 1999 to 2002. Definitely my choice.

Or if you want 6 cylinders a Nissan Skyline R33 GST (not the GTR) absolutely fabulous engine single turbo 250 BHP amazing torque, will go for ever if properly serviced. Again four seats and a really good size boot, great car.

Can it really be possible there is no modern 2+2 sports convertible car not made by Porsche? This was the whole reason I fell for a 944 (and so did the kids!).

As capable as the likes of an M3 might be, lopping the roof off a saloon car doesn't count. A Jag XK perhaps? It's no sports car, but the v8 might compensate. Or how about a Maserati 3200 - they're surprisingly cheap these days and the repair costs will be familiar to some of us 944 owners!

But lopping the roof off a Coupe (944) is fine? [;)]

As far as I'm aware the new XK (and obviously the Boxster) was designed as a soft top. You could say that makes the Coupe over engineered. (You'll not get a new type XK for £8K though.)

Aren't they actually terribly expensive to run?

Heard nothing but horror stories about them, but would be very much interested to hear otherwise as I quite like them! :)
