Naughty 944 won't start...

OK... here are the symptoms.

1. Nasty buzzing noise heard which appears to be emanating from somewhere to the rear of the engine. Occurs when ignition switched on.
2. Engine cranks but no movement from rev counter.
3. Occasionally, nasty buzzing noise will stop and engine will start at that point if cranked. Will run for a little while and then cut out to the accompaniment of "the return of the buzzing noise".
4. DME relay has been changed for known-good replacement. No improvement.

Suspect "sensor problems". Please advise!

Sensor problems - would be my guess too.

First try wiggling them - Vitesse seems to have the knack with that!

Sounds like a crank sensor to me! Strange that it would be buzzing though! Can you get your hand onto the crank sensors on an S2 you might be able to feel one of them buzzing [:D].

Thanks for all the ideas!

I tried wiggling things... no dice. Yes, the buzzing is strange... I don't think it is the imobiliser as when that is active the car refuses to crank.

Anyway... I admitted defeat and had the AA man round. He couldn't get the damn thing to start either; he was mumbling darkly about defective earths and broken ECUs... he was adamant that the reference / speed sensor was fine. The car has now been despatched on the back of an AA truck to my favourite mechanic. I await his verdict.

Hope this helps you to feel better!

Speed / Reference sensor replaced and the old girl is now gambolling around the lanes of West Sussex in the hands of my mechanic friend... So much for Mr. AA man's diagnosis.

Good news, Glenn!

I haven't trusted an AA/RAC diagnosis since a van "starter motor has blown-up" was actually a worn switch.

Good news, Glenn!

In a way... problem is that when the car is with my mate the jobs start multiplying. All genuine, of course, and all things that really need fixing but it doesn't make it any easier on the wallet. [;)]

Flip me - that's one seriously long lens you have there!

Canon 600 f/4L so fairly large, yes. One of the reasons for me buying a 944... I needed something that could hold the camera gear.

Now that's style! "My camera bag isn't big enough, and I'd like a motorised one. Let's buy a Porsche ... "
