My sliders have stopped working!

Thanks gents.

I've expanded my saved search on ebay to include more terms. You're right though Waylander, they mainly look rather rough - worse than my current one. Guessing they're pricey from Porsche, or NLA? Will check, just in case.

Mine is 1986 non-AC, so no temp numbers, just red and blue colour gradations. I guess the AC version might not work, as I don't have the connections etc. for it? Or will it work, but (obviously) without aircon?

Ok the price for a new one........................................................£648.00, 944 653 021 02 01C. and yes they have stock
the good part is the front facia is still available at £28.00, 944 653 203 00 1DB

And no I dont think an AC one will work as you have two buttons on the left on a AC car

Cheers W

OPC Exeter quoted me £584 for one. Interesting to see that I could just get a new fascia, that would improve the look if I do get an ancient one from somewhere. Will try and do more fault finding this week.

I am not sure a red/blue is even compatible with the number non a/c I think the number unit tries to maintain a temp like climate control albeit with aircon, whereas the red blue just allows you to set a flow air through the heater matrix into the cabin as the cable did in a square dash.
The red/blue were quite rare back in the late 90's when my heating was stuck on hot as I think they are the first year of oval dash only. However If I remember correctly one of my servo motors being seized did stop other functions from the controller working properly - I did find a section in the workshop manuals describing which motor did what and a way of applying voltage to check operation. I think they are 3 pins with one being earth the other 2 have a positive voltage applied to move the arm one way or the other. I don't have the manuals on this PC it could have been the electrical or chassis section. The one that was seized I removed / dismantled, removing the motor, giving it a good soak of lubricant and ran it direct to a battery which freed it off, re-assembled and reinstalled it all worked fine again. ( I had got the number style controller as initially I thought my heater controller was broken, pretty sure I tried it again after and it didn't work in a car that didn't have the sensors, but it was over 20 years ago!)

The servo motors are dotted around the heater unit, I would try and identify which ones do move, if any!

Thanks Tony, more to think about.

My car is 1985.5, so seems to have a mixture of pre-85 and post-85 bits, just to keep things interesting! The red / blue temp dial TCUs do seem to be fairly hard to find.

I do have the workshop manuals, will try and investigate further tomorrow.

as far as i can see in PET2

there are 3 different control units
944 653 021 02
944 653 021 03 M424 (Automatic Control)
944 653 021 04 M573 (AirCon)

these are on a 1985.5 > 1988

The 03 and 04 versions are only listed for cars 1989 > on

I replaced the TCU in my 1988 Lux as I have the common constant heat issue. I had already checked the 2 clips behind the glovebox and they were OK. I bought what I think is a later used TCU which made no difference to the constant heat although with the ignition on and the fan speed knob set to zero I can still hear the fan running, albeit slowly. I didn't notice this with my original unit. Apart from that it works fine so I assume the constant heat issue must be due to a HVAC system fault. My old TCU is in good condition complete with the sliders, knobs and backplate. The part number of my old unit is: 944 653 021-00. The sliders don't illuminate at night so it needs 2 new bulbs soldering in which is a common issue due to the age of these units. There is a tiny hairline crack above the recirculate button but it's hard to spot. I was going to advertise it soon but if anyone here is interested in it, send me a PM.

There is a small sucker fan which runs constant, certainly on climate control cars, which lies behind the circular vent next to the cigarette lighter. It houses a thermistor and measures cabin temp.

More interesting is the feu orange, my mrs would kill for one of those

It's not a real one. It's a giant replica I had made for a mate with an HGV.
There are quite a few original ones on ebay if you want one for the missus.

Sandspider, I have replied to your PM, I will go hunting for the 944 one i have some where, PM your address and I will My Herpes it to you ASAP

i was wondering how this is going, did the part I sent help solve the issue, it would be good to update the followers of this

heater issues can be a pain on these cars

Hi Martin

Thanks for sending your TCU. I've managed to drive the car once since installing it, and as I said, it's better, but doesn't seem quite right - I now have some control over the air distribution (face / feet) but not as much as I think I used to. Maybe the parameters for the 968 are different? In any case, I still have only hot air, despite replacing the clip behind the glove compartment. So it seems that I have a faulty TCU, and probably another problem too! (Unless it's just the TCU issue, but the 968 version won't quite do what my car needs, and I do need a temp control with red and blue rather than numbers...)

Ho hum. I'll try and drive it once more this week if that's OK, then I'll return your TCU.

Thanks again, definitely helps with fault finding.

Giles

Right, it's called the heater control valve, located at the back of the engine on a 8v sorry not that familiar with 8v cars

It has a vac pot on it and a lever arm, when vac is applied it should turn off the hot water, if the vac pot is busted or stuck you get hot all the time

It's just below the picture with the clip part numbers

Got ya, thanks. I have checked the vac lines mentioned in that link and they seem to be fine as far as I can see. I don't have a vacuum tester, but I can at least have a poke at the control valve. Hope to get a bit of time for this tomorrow. Are you in a hurry to have your TCU back?!
